“Nice Japanese accommodation in Kyoto”
Reviewed 3 January 2012

This was the second time I came to Nishiyama ryokan (first one was in early 2007), and things are still the same, if not: better. There were still the friendly and smiley faces greeting us at the reception every morning, and the places are still maintained as it was when I visited it the first time around.

What I like about this ryokan is the Kyoto feel to it. The hotel is located a bit further than the Kyoto centre, but the fact that its a little tucked away is what makes it interesting and cosy. However, subway station is just a stone throw away, which makes it highly accessible too.

This is a modern Ryokan. That is, it's not hundreds of years old with lots of drafty ambiance. You do get a taste of tradition, sleeping on tatami mats, soaking in their excellent public bath, and enjoying a delightful traditional breakfast. The staff is excellent and the location convenient. We very much enjoyed the cultural activities provided by the staff.

Room Tip: Facing the courtyard would probably be quieter than the street

I just spend 2 nights in this Ryokan last week with my boyfriend, we totally like this place. It's a very good experience for us in Kyoto.

First, it's about the environment. Everywhere is nice, clean and new. The lobby is nice, esp like the delicate backyard garden. The rooms are more spacious than I expected because I thought it would be smaller as I picked a 8-tatami room instead of 10-tatami. But it's a 2-room place so we got plenty area to move around. It's my first experience staying in a tatami-room and I totally like it and would want to do it again. The toilet is a bit small but still very functional and clean and I like the separated sink at the door place so while one is having a shower, the other can still use the sink outside. The tatami-room is a very cozy place to stay.

Secondly, it's about the location. I like the location because it's the area surrounded by all the tourist must-go area, just the middle of everything. The streets of shops and restaurant are within walking distance like 15-20 minutes. It's not super convenient (while the busy shops are located downstairs) but I still enjoyed the peaceful neighborhood around. It's like 5-10minute walk from the subway station. But there are bus stops all around the Ryokan so it's still pretty convenient overall.

Finally, it's about the staff. They are very helpful. Every time before we go out we would ask for suggested directions, and they can always point out the easier transport to ease our travelling time. And I especially like the desert "Zhi Ji" they prepared in our rooms, I bought several boxes back home. :)

The only bad point I could think of is that, it's a pity that I couldn't enjoy the cycling experience in Kyoto. It's out of expectations that this ryokan provide rental bicycles services. But you can only rent it for a whole day but not several hours. We originally planned to use it for a short ride to the Garden at the north but we failed. It would be if the hotel can provide hourly rental service or even free rental service.

Room Tip: Don't worry about the size of the 8-tatami room! It's more than enough for 2 people :)

I stayed in the traditional single room--adequate size for 1 person. You sleep on a futon which takes getting used to but works fine. The downstairs is a nice place to relax with free internet, and the public bath is very relaxing at the end of the day. The traditional Japanese breakfast is good--worth trying at least once. This is a multi-generation family owned and operated inn with excellent service, and workable English skills. The location is fairly central in Kyoto and walkable to the subway station and central shopping areas. It takes about 30 minutes by subway to get to the International Convention Center.

It's our second time for visiting Kyoto. Every time we choose a ryokan for staying in such a traditional city. We stayed in Nishiyama Ryokan for three nights. The staffs are nice and helpful. The location is good, pretty close to subway station and bus stops. It's near Teramachi Dori where you can find lots of restaurants. Good place in Kyoto !
