This was the best restaurant experience I've had in a long time. Not only were delicious gluten free options available, the service was exceptional! Gluten free is very hard to find in Japan so this was a wonderful option for a celiac. I had the GF lamb pilaf while my husband had the steak (not GF) which we both recommend. The meat was cooked perfectly. We shared a chopped salad to start that was made gluten free. They changed the dressing so be sure to tell them if you are a celiac. The servers spoke English very well making it easy to communicate my dietary restriction.

I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone including celiacs. :)

What impressed me most was not the food, not the service, but the building. (Don't get me wrong. Both the food and the service were very good.)

We were just walking around. All the buildings we saw were typical little Japanese houses with (occasionally) a very old, clean and small shrine squeezed between two houses. We hit some main street where there were some larger (boring) square commercial buildings. And all of a sudden, this beautiful building oozing history and culture appeared! The style reminded me of the historic buildings that line the Bund in Shanghai. I looked up at the entrance and thought, "Whatever this place is, we have to go inside!"

There was a Japanese style garden in the back with bamboo, water and a cute pond. I felt like I could spend an entire afternoon there with a cup of tea and a good book. (But I was with a loud 9 months' old.) I was a little worried at first that the restaurant and the other guests might not like a loud baby in such an elegant place, but fortunately they didn't mind us. The nice lady on the table next to us said to us in Japanese, "No worries. It's OK." What a relief!

It is really a unique place to enjoy some nice food and appreciate the mixed culture of traditional and modern Japan - a graceful lady in full set kimono in beige and dark gray (the kind of kimono for mature married ladies) sitting across the table with a younger man in a well tailored business suit, both of them politely talking in a low voice, enjoying their lunch with knife and fork.

We went for Christmas dinner so not sure if our experience matches what they do on a normal day. For Christmas, they served a fixed price menu which was only slightly overpriced with many courses of small portions. The tables were set a little too close but fortunately not close enough to hear the conversation of people next to you as the music was playing loudly. Overall i felt it would be a good place for young couples who want a western dining experience without the full price tag. Not for a fine dining experience.

Dear Holidaymoody,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us here on TripAdvisor.

You are correct, our Christmas course menu was a limited time offer for the holiday season. On normal days we offer our guests a assortment of a la carte dishes for dinner and very reasonably priced lunch sets. Our chefs update our menus monthly to match each season and the most freshest ingredients available.

Also as you mentioned, a large portion of our guests are indeed couples who want a lively night out on the town without the full price tag. Not to mention our overseas visitors who want a small taste of home when traveling through Japan.

Should you find yourself in Kyoto again in the future, we hope you will stop by and visit us again, we would love to have the pleasure of serving you again.

We went there for a date with my partner. From the outside, it just look like an old classic building but the inside is gorgeous! the different rooms are very nice but the best is by far to have a table by the bamboo forest and pond!! Very nice and romantic!
The menu present a traditional french cuisine and we were not disappointed! Amazing meal from the beginning till the end with a special recommendation for their Rice pudding for dessert! :)
The staff was very nice and knowledgeable for the wine. They made a good recommendation for us with our meat platter.
After dinner, we had a stroll by the pond and watched the Koy fishes all over the place.
Peaceful, relaxing and great food, definitely worth the price!

Dear Sofian D,

Thank you for visiting us and sharing that experience here on TripAdvisor.

Our building is IN FACT an old and classic building.
It was ahead of its time when it was built back in 1927 by the master architect Goichi Takeda. We have since remodeled the inside while keeping the feel and history of days past.

We are very lucky to have multiple sommeliers on our staff that work closely with our chefs and guests to prepare the very best experience for all our guests.

Lastly, we are glad our fish friends were able to make your night even more special!

We look forward to your next visit and the opportunity to serve you again.
