Great location. Great service and good food. Just wouldn't call this a 3 michelin star restaurant (luckily i've been to a couple....and this doesn't match up to those experiences.). So when the check comes and it charges michelin star levels....then your review of the place is a little different.

So again, worth a go if you have no budget issues.

Tonight is the last of our Michelin 3-star trip in Kyoto and Osaka .

We are at Hyotei , a restaurant providing Kaiseki cuisine . We will be hard to be impressed as we visited two exquisite ones in the past two days .

The second course , Mukozuke , has three slices of the best chewy Red Sea Bream sashimi I have ever tried .

The fourth course called Hassun has an assortment of sushi and condiments but the most impressive is the Tilefish marinated with Chinese wine . This dish is supposed to date back 450 years ago and offered to travelers who did their worshipping in the nearby famous Nanzenji temple. The whole combination is further accompanied by two halves of a high quality soft-boiled egg . They cannot go wrong as it is their signature dish .

Then , abalone with urchin , blended with seaweed and wax gourd . This actually superseded the others and in my view , firmly justified their three star status for almost nine years in a row and is no doubt the jewel of the crown . By this time , if I were the officer of Michelin , I would have accumulated full marks in my assessment sheet and can call it a day .

The fantastic red miso soup , on its own , is probably less enjoyable than when it is accompanied by the ginger rice with beef . Good Japanese rice is always in the upper echelons of this crop .

For a restaurant with over 450 years of history , it just cannot be an ordinary establishment .

I am pretty sure that they got their 3Michelin stars from the environment of the restaraunt because I cant see what else would have gotten them this high rating. The food was disappointing with sub-par quality. Examples are the yellowtail sashimi we got was chewy and same for the beef that were served at the end of the meal. The presentation of the food was nothing special and the service was mediocre. In some occassions the staff even forgot to explain to us the dishes they served us. But the only thing thats worth a visit here is their environment. siutated in the middle of a zen japanese garden, this ambience is hard to beat.

I wouldnt recommend this place unless you value ambience of the restaurant more than anything and willing to pay USD400 for it

Maybe it is a cultural divide but my wife and I did not enjoy our dinner at Hyotei at all.
We had multiple occasions to have very fine Japanese dinners during our stay in Japan, Hyotei was not one of them.
Yes, it is very traditional, yes, the menu is based on seasonal ingredients, yes the setting and service are pure traditional japanese style, but il lacked the refinement you would expect from a celebrated restaurant.
The room we had was not comfortable, either too cold or too warm when we had to put the heater.
The food in the end was average even ending with a mediocre and badly cooked tilefish we could no eat as it was full of bones.
And the price is ridiculously expensive...
