“Our home away from home in Kyoto”
Reviewed 4 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Apple House welcomed us back for a sixth stay and managed to keep us warm and dry through a very wet April and to provide a fabulous base for our visits to some fabulous places - revisiting Heiezan and Shisendo and finally making it to Fushima Inari. This is such a welcoming and rewarding self-catering home that we are already looking forward to our return.

“wonderful clean traditional japanese house, lovely helpful hosts, with good bus access to sights and town”

my wife and I had a great stay here. Hiroko and David were great hosts, very kind and helpful. Lovely traditional Japanese house, very clean, quiet location near misty mountains but easy, reliable access to town by bus which also went past famous temples and scenic locations. Good local shops, would definitely recommend Apple house to friends and relatives. In fact I already have.

“A cosy little place well-hidden in the narrow streets of Kyoto's Historical East Side”
Reviewed 21 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

Coming from Hiroshima we arrive late at night in Kyoto but Hiroko still came to pick us up at the train station and took time to show us the house. Lovely house I must add. Nice neighborhood, comfortable, clean and inviting. A small secret place well hidden within the narrow streets of the Historical East Side. You can walk your way around if you want but in our case the kids loved the bike rides to the grocery stores - about a kilometer or two from the house location. If you are lucky, you'll have a quick chat with the neighbors and some hints about the city and temples. (Yes the language barrier can be an issue but you always find some ways!) Hiroko is a very helpful guide as well and provides a bunch of English books and references. There is a bus stop close to the house and it brings you into Kyoto where you can jump into the train, tramway, metro or another bus. Be aware that the house is located slightly outside the Main Kyoto area - so you'll have a small extra amount to pay each time you leave or get to this area. (Even if you take a day pass!). If you don't mind walking, you can climb up or drop off a station before and save that extra money. Since it was snowing hard when we were there we agreed that this little extra was a fair price to pay to prevent the walk in the wet snow! Otherwise the system is pretty efficient. Talking about extra, it would have been nice to know that the electricity fees were not included for this period of the year before we get there. It wouldn't have prevented us from renting the house, and it's not an astronomical amount of money, but we were just a bit surprised and would have budgeted accordingly. Hiroko is a very kind and friendly host - she came to change the bed sheets (The electric bed sheet are awesome!) and left us a bunch of origami that we took home with us as a reminder of the good time we had in Kyoto.

Management Response
22 Jan 2015
Thank you very much for your review! Just a small point to clarity as you have commented that you were surprised to have been charged extra for electricity; we do advertise that we request our guests to pay for the utilities used during their stay and we explain it when we first respond to any inquiry. It is also clearly written in our tenancy conditions which we send to our guests as soon as they decide to reserve the house. As you booked the house well in advance and we request the payment of rent before you arrive, you must have just forgotten that you had to pay for the utilities at the end of your stay. We shall remind our future guests of the utility charges a few days before they check in, so that they remember that the rent does not include those charges, especially if they book Apple House well in advance as many do. Thank you for expressing your surprise!

“Home away from home”

Staying in the lovely Apple house really allowed us to experience local Kyoto life. We didn't feel like tourists at all and were able to immerse ourselves in the day to day activities of local people while exploring the city. From our morning bike rides (bikes included with the house) down to the bakery to buy fresh pastries for breakfast, to our daily commute on the reliable #5 bus, to being recognised and greeted by the neighbours as we traversed the laneways around Apple House, it all added up to a truly wonderful stay. Our host Hiroko provided us with an abundance of information about Kyoto which made our travels very easy. She was also always available either in person or via her mobile to answer questions or help with travel issues.
Apple House itself is comfortable, homely and a taste of Japanese life and Hiroko seemed to have gone out of her way to make our stay memorable. Her origami prowess decorated the house beautifully for us.
Even with 2 tall teenagers and being confronted with cold wintery conditions Apple House provided a haven for us after days spent exploring Kyoto.

“Comfortable experience, typical Japanese home”

House was very clean and all amenities worked well. Hiroko was very helpful - although we were pretty self sufficient. #5 bus gets you were you want to go, however if you want to be in the thick of things, best to stay closer to town. We were happy doing day trips and picking up dinner from supermarket on way home - but this may not suit everyone. There was a fabulous Nepalese restaurant by the tram station and also Hida restaurant (5 minute walk) was very good and friendly. Hiroko picked us up from the train station and returned us when it was time to leave, which was a terrific help with luggage.
