“Saturday morning flea market.... great time to visit.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2012

To enter the inner part of the temple complex with the best views of the pagoda is 600 yen. If you want the absolute best camera shots, then the ticket is worth it. Otherwise, there are a lot of good views of the pagoda from outside.

I visited on a Saturday and there was a huge flea market going on.... the selection of handicrafts, second hand clothes, and food was amazing. It is so large it spills out onto the neighboring streets. It is, of course, crowded... but if you are looking for the unusual items to take back with you to remember Kyoto, the selection here far surpasses anything from any of the usual souvenir shops.

There was also a LOT of religious activity going on in the temple ... there is definitely a lot to see.

Considering it's a 10-15 min walk from Kyoto Station, it's quite easy to get to.

“Treasure Hall well worth fee.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2011

An oasis of calm, you can walk through the grounds (no fee) and get a good enough look at the pagoda and some of the more important buildings from the outside. However, the 500-yen fee for the Kondo (Main Hall), Treasure Hall, central garden and to see the pagoda close up is worth every yen. I was lucky to come across a woman gardener who showed me a spot (across the pond in the central garden) from where I would get the best photograph of the pagoda.

“Toji Temple”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2011

We visited on August 16, 2011. The buildings and interiors are amazing. There is an entrance fee but it is worth it. We spent a couple of hours here taking pictures and looking around. The pagoda is great!

“Save the best for last!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2011

Visited this temple during the day we were leaving for Osaka and didn't think we would be blown away! In my opinion this temple ranks right up there with Sanjusangendo if not more spectacular! Great temple with statues (national treasures) at a nice central location.

“Antique Market on First Sunday of Month!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2010

I happened to be in Kyoto on the 1st Sunday in April and was able to attend the Antique Market at Toji. There were over 50 vendors selling: obi, kimono, Imari ceramics, glassware, samurai paraphernalia, kokeshi dolls, scrolls, small tansu and many other items. Opens 0500 and closes 1700. Subways open at 0530. Definitely worth a visit. The vendors are willing to haggle and the prices are more reasonable than the stores. Be sure to shop around... I found a beautiful Imari sake warmer for 20,000Y (approx $200) at one vendor's stall and an almost identical one for 2500Y (approx $25) at another. Though if you like something, I suppose you will want to buy it before someone else does.
