Upon arrival at the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, we took an almost hour's subway ride to the Huangsha stop. After a brief lunch at the station's Metropolitan Mall (where a small Paka Supermarket is on the 2nd floor), we walked about 15 mins to the Victory Hotel's East Wing. Exit the Metro's D Exit and either jay walk across the two narrow but rather busy roads or up the Pedestrian bridge and down again.

Check in was rather fast and we were asked to sign a credit card slip for the RMB$1,000 authorization slip. Having chose Ctrip to book our Standard Twin room because it was the only website that specifies a 7-8th floor room, we were told that rooms on those two floors are undergoing renovations (some knocking noises in the morning and afternoon but nothing that serious) and so they will upgrade us to a Business room, 3511, on the 5th floor.

Don't know about the room size of a Standard room but our Business room was quite spacious - super Single Twins, coffee table with a armchair & Console, huge make up mirror, safe, kettle with free tea & coffee daily, two mineral water bottles daily, minibar, bathroom with a big tub, large TV with almost 60 channels (including Singapore's Channel NewsAsia, CNN, TV5Monde, Russia Today, etc)

Room's windows were quite soundproofed but sometimes we could still hear the music from the lounge downstairs and TV from the neighboring rooms. Housekeeping was very efficient in delivering a fan, making my bed softer with 2 extra layers of comforters as I much prefer softer beds (though admittedly, the beds here are not hard by any means), ice buckets etc.

The free Wifi is fast enough and very easy to use, however, you could not use Whatsapp, Google and Emails in China (not the Hotel's fault). As our rate did not include breakfasts, we often walk about 12 mins to Shanghsiajiu Street's Guangzhou Restaurant and Tao Tao Jiu for yum cha/breakfast. Tried the Hotel's Restaurant on the 2nd floor once, and it was quite a nice experience, too, with 15% discount given to hotel guests only (but this was not advertised everywhere). Only setback - the Restaurant is only opened from 8.30am onwards, a tad too late for yum cha.

The Hotel's location on Shamian Island is both a double edged sword for it is a tourist attraction in its own right, providing you with a rare glimpse into the Colonial days of Guangzhou in the 1900's, there is a serious lack of affordable dinning options on the island. The only two we could find were the small noodles shop attached to the Victory's East Wing and the Submarine sandwich shop near the Victory's West Wing. Other more authentic and more affordable dinning options are 10-12 mins walk across the two busy highways, via two bridges - a small stone bridge then a bigger and higher, pedestrian bridge. And as taxis are rather hard to come by in all of Guangzhou, but more so on Shamian Island, its a daily chore to walk 10-15 mins to either the Huangsha or the Cultural Park subway stations for a subway ride.

If you are staying at the East Wing, the Cultural Park subway station is actually nearer, about 8-10 mins easy walk across a zebra crossing but there are no shopping nor dinning options near there. But if you are staying at the West Wing, then the Huangsha subway station is slightly closer, with dinning options, shopping and a supermarket at the Huangsha station.

After a 8 nights stay at this wonderful Hotel, we took a metered taxi booked by the Hotel to the Baiyun Airport, and paid RMB$110 + 15 toll charges = RMB$125. In Winter, the roof top swimming pool was drained dry, luckily, I did not bring my swimming costumes along. But I saw that a Fitness room is still in operation though. All in all, a very good choice in Guangzhou indeed.

Room Tip: As always, ask for a higher floor NOT facing the road in front or the lounge at the side.

We stayed in a balcony double room at the west building for two nights. The room was spacious and comfy, quiet neighbourhood, there was a construction in a morning but it was acceptable. Also shopping mall and the old town just a few minutes away. The wifi was good, so as buffet breakfast, even not too many choices but it was nice. I was not too happy about was the expected time of the birthday cake, I made a request for the arrival day for the birthday cake for a little celebration but it could only be arranged on the next day. It would be better if there was more privacy for the bathroom as there was only one sliding door for both the bathroom and the toilet. However, the service and the location was satisfactory and we would like to stay there again.

Room Tip: West building is good

Stayed here for several times but that was some years ago. Came back and found it has slightly refurnished: the lobby of the East Wing was decorated. Room itself was also touched up. But the bathroom remained largely the same.

So, still not really a 3.5 or 4 stars. But the main point of coming here is for a short stay at Shamian. Shamian is still a quiet place that I enjoy walking around. It's redevelopment project is, frankly, not a commercial success. But this helps to keep the place quiet. I took a walk from Shamian to Beijing Road: a pleasant heritage trail that gives a good summary of the history of the city.

For the hotel itself, it has improved. If you are not looking for something luxurious, it is still an option: under RMB450.

Nice and quiet. On the one hand it is near to metro which can easily get you to a center of the city, on the other hand it is on separate island with a nice park, beauteful trees etc. Free coach to and from Canton Fair. Nice Western restaurant. I would stay there again during next Guangzhou visit.

Located in very colonial part of Guangzhou. Good standard of hotel. Don't get excited about service. Staff. Or breakfast. If you can find for yourself then great place to stay. Near jewellery mkt. Near great seafood restaurant. Clean beds.
