Being from New York City, subway systems are not thought of as beautiful, elegant (or even clean). St. Petersburg however, has a subway system that rivals most elegant homes. Crystal chandeliers, mosaic tiles, gorgeous ceilings, beautiful wall sconces, paintings, and clean!

Entering the subway and seeing the walls and ceilings was quite amazing! We stopped at a couple of stations and one was more beautiful than the next. The stations are very clean with gorgeous chandeliers, sculptures and ornate ceilings. The subway itself seemed very easy to use, but we were with a guide so didn't have to worry about our stops. Everything is written in Russian with no other language options so if you don't know where you're going, it would be hard to figure out.

We found a listing that claimed to identify were six of the most beautiful metro station platforms in St. Petersburg. We decided to find out for ourselves what is special about each of them. It turns out all of them are located on the Red Line (#1)

(1) Ploschad Vosstania-Yes, definitely a 5. Decorative arched ceiling columns with elaborate decorative wall light fixtures next to the decorative arch openings. There are flush light fixtures in the arched ceiling. There are bronze plaques inserted in each arched column.

(2) Avtovo-Yes, definitely a 5. It has 16 of the columns covered with patterned pressed glass spiral designs, unique hanging ceiling light fixtures, ornate ceiling, an end wall featuring a colorful mosaic of a women holding a child, ornate wall plaques.

(3) Kirovsky Zavod-Yes, definitely a 5. Rectangular columns covered in marble, capitals depicting mining, commerce, oil drilling, and manufacturing, groupings of nine flush rectangular ceiling light fixtures, and at one end a bust of Lenin.

(4) Narvskaya-Yes, definitely a 5. The arched vaulted ceiling has flush rectangular light fixtures that follow the arch. The walls have a red stone strip that runs the entire length of the platform walls. They are decorated with a soviet star and leaf motif. The walls are finished in white marble with many bronze inserts featuring a hammer and sickle motif. There are column corner sculptured frieze groupings featuring soviet citizens in different occupations.

(5) Baltiyskaya-Yes, definitely a 5. The rectangular arched pillars are covered in marble. There are half marble columns flush against the arched pillars. There are unique flush lights fixtures above the pillars that look like waves. There are nautical theme grills on the platform walls. At one end there is a 1917 Revolution themed wall painting

(6) Tekhnologichesky Institut (In the direction of Prospekt veteranov)-Yes, definitely a 5. The arched walls are finished in marble. There are 24 bas-reliefs of famous Russian scientists and technologists shown on wall medallions. There are also unique decorative grilles on the station platform walls.

I definitely recommend a self-guided tour of the Red Line (#1) most beautiful metro platforms.

I can't rate St. Petersburg's Metro as a subway system (I traveled a distance of one stop), but it's an interesting tourist experience.

We were hesitant to take a ride, offered on our guided tour, because of the terrorist bombing between two stations in April 2017. The others wanted to go, so we went.

The 70+ surface stations are each architecturally unique. We got on at Ploshchad Vosstaniya ("Uprising Square"), one of the system's original stations, opened in 1955. It's a circular building with a spike on top. The ceiling work and lighting underground were interesting as well. The line beneath this station is 190 feet deep, making for a steep elevator ride (because of St. Petersburg's swampy nature, this metro system is one of the world's deepest).

The subway cars seemed basic amid the splendor of the station. The guide said trains come every minute in rush hour, though, and we did find you had to get on quick or be left behind.
