One of the most impressive churches I have visited. With its beautiful exterior and abundant interior, there is more than enough to see. Plus, while we were visiting a service was taking place - really interesting to experience that.

This is quite a contrast from the Cathedral of Spilt Blood in terms of architecture and murals. The experience was great as we had the opportunity to see a holy mass in progress. Quite in the same line with a Latin mass. The murals were more like frescoes but freshly done. It needs more warmth to feel a living cathedral. It is just awakening from slumber of being a museum once upon a Time. But it’s architecture in terms of the columns seem unique.

We had our our local guide who was able to explain the details within the cathedral, which is now a museum. Currently the main altar is used for church services only on major religious holidays.
In 2019 it is being handed back to the Russian Orthodox Church, and entrance is supposed to be free then. But it is cheap enough now, so make sure you go inside.
St. Isaac’s is one of the world’s largest and most decorated cathedrals. The interior is adorned with 400kg of gold trim, mosaics and paintings.
It is the 2nd tallest building in St Petersburg. If you want, you can pay to climb up the stairs to the dome and get great views of the city.

If you like your religion gold then this place will impress. The colours and patterns of the many types of stone are beautiful and the amount of gold everywhere is dazzling however it is a cathedral and not a museum in the normally accepted use of the word. While not at odds with many places of worship in the UK I object to having to pay to visit a church.
Impressive in its scale it never fails to impress me how 19th century architects managed to design and build these places just using pen and paper.

I was really shocked, that's my favorite sightseen in St. Petersburg for sure. The view on the top is breathtaking. Inside the museum and church both!
