A small resort, far from any sort of hustle and bustle, this is the perfect place to get away from it all. Perhaps due to its location off the beaten track, we had the feeling we were stranded on an island somewhere - in a good way!
Dive-Hub offers simple rooms with A/C, king-size or double beds, en-suit bathrooms with hot water and a stocked fridge in every room. The mosquito nets protecting the beds seem to be more geared at keeping the geckos away than protecting you from mosquitos - we didn't see or hear a single one, which impressed us enormously.
As the name suggests, diving is the main activity at the hotel (beyond lounging in the hammocks and drinking your way through the cocktail list). The diving gear and equipment is good quality and well maintained. Whether you're doing your PADI or SSI open water or more advanced follow on courses, the books are available in several languages and dive sites are located directly in front of the bungalows (see pictures from other reviews - that is an adequate reflection of what awaits). The owner will also take you (free of charge) 15min around the corner by boat where a a labyrinth of corals with large blocks, canyons and caves await. If you've exhausted the local dive spots / want an adventure at sea, they also offer one and two day (overnight on the boat) boat tours on the owners snazzy new boat. We had a great adventure, despite some choppy waves on the way back thanks to an un-forecast earthquake.
So to sum it up:
Pro: Tranquil, no outside noises (only place I've been in the philippines where I couldn't hear karaoke!), no mosquitos!
Con: 1 1/2 drive from Dumuagette airport and down quite a steep and rutted path for the last 5 minutes. Makes getting away hard unless you have your own transport. Having said that, there really isn't much around. Closest place to shop or go for dinner would be Dumuagette anyway (hotel offers transport, though not cheap).
Pro: They offer both local and westernised dishes, a la cart or on a half-board basis. Staff are hapy to cater to special requests, either by advance booking or once you are there.
Con: No fish on the menu - its a marine reserve and the owner doesn't want to encourage illegal fishing, so it is understandable. If you make a special request, they will try and get good fresh fish from town (it was excellent!).
Safety - huge pro! There are guards patrolling the beach at all times. Ostensibly to ward off fishers from the marine reserve, it also means no unauthorised visitors on the compound. The German owner assured us the staff were all trustworthy so we left our rooms unlocked and nothing was touched. While my husband was impressed with the lack of mosquitos, this was the most important feature for me and I really appreciated the safe and welcome feeling it gave, not having to worry about my things, or dragging around hotel keys.\
Pro: Simple but cute bungalows, separate beach towels and mats. Sun loungers at the beach as well as in a little garden for those who want to avoid the sun. The main living area is great - bamboo structure (with concrete poured down through the bamboo for a solid foundation) over the water with a cooling breeze and plenty of chairs, tables and hammocks.
Con: Don't let the hot water scald you - the owner will explain the hot water heater (simple after first try). We were the only guests so it wasn't an issue, but it is possible to hear sounds from the next room, through the open structures.
Internet: Not sure whether this is a pro or a con. There is no wifi, although the owner will create a wifi zone with his mobile if you ask (free of charge). The kids were bummed out by the lack of internet, but the result was a truly relaxing family get away where no one could disappear behind their electronic devices. So perhaps a pro, after all?
All in all, we would highly recommend this place to families, serious divers, novice divers wanting to do their Padi / SSI or any follow on courses, and those looking to get away from it all. Perhaps on that note - the owner will also let you do dives on your own (with your buddy) after an initial assessment dive, which we appreciated.
