I reserved at Hostal Colonial based on TripAdvisor reviews. The experience was consistent with those reviews.
I had breakfast in the little eatery attached to the hostal, but this was not included in my room rate. Dinners I took at nearby El Celler de Cler, which I highly recommend.
The room was comfortable, but I must confess it took some getting used to the idea of external window bars and open unscreened windows for cross-ventilation. This while the TV ran public service announcements about dengue and zika. Oh well, I didn't get bit, so I guess all is well.
I took advantage of the travel service office immediately next to the hostal lobby (owned by the same people?) and procured guide services for my forays around the archaeology sites outside the city. Based on my experience, I can recommend them (Colonial Tours, reportedly offices also in Chiclayo, but I didn't find them).
I'd stay at Hostal Colonial again. Decent area of the city, decent service from the staff, all around decent stay.
