Falling on hard times?

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 May 2024
We have been going to this resort at least once a year for over 15 years. Sadly, it seems to have been a bit neglected since our last visit 9 months ago. While the king room, beach front, is comfortable, the grounds are showing signs of neglect. The pool was clean. However, you can no longer get a pool lounge chair without paying an additional daily fee and there are no chairs in the beach front palapas. Coffee maker no longer available in the room. The food in the restaurant continues to be delicious and the service is very prompt and friendly. It just need a bit more TLC to bring it back to its former self.

At first I went with the quirks of a "resort" that appears to have been unimproved nor updated in several years. Remotes for the tv and a/c were distributed at check-in with explicit instructions to return them in the same Ziploc bag. The walls in my room were cracked, damaged, and the paint was peeling. The mattress was poor. The mattress cover was ripped. The towels and sheets were stained. The grounds were in poor condition. The fitness center equipment was old. The bar at the pool was never open. The poolside chairs and tables were filthy. The beach cabanas were worthless. The beach lounge seats did not exist. I knew I was in a remote part of Panama, so I made do. However, check-out changed my mindset. I was informed I had stained a pillow case blue and a $7.50 charge had been added to my room. I explained I had not even one blue item in my possession and the stain could not have originated from me. I shared the condition of my room and the stained linens. The resort claimed no knowledge of any needed repairs in any guest room or area. I returned to my room to take pictures. The 4 pillowcases from my room had been removed. When I returned to the desk, I was informed they were charging me for 3 more stained pillowcases. The manager refused to speak to me directly. The person at the desk was also a victim of the manager's scam. I had no option other than to accept the charges. Stay away. Just, stay away.

It was kind of a strange experience. We were the only guests at this huge resort, kind of reminiscent of The Shining - lol! That being said, the staff were extremely friendly and eager to please. Rooms were a bit dated but clean and ac works well. Food was delicious. The second day we were fortunate to have another couple arrive, fellow Canadians and had lots of fun with them.

The only thing we found really annoying was that there No lounge chairs at the pool and no chairs at all at the beach. You were lucky to find an old log to sit on if you were doing a long walk.

Do not waste your money here. The photos must be very old, the place is dilapidated and in need of a serious overhaul. Staff are trying their best but it is beyond tired.
Power goes off regularly. Bed had plastic protective sheet. Room generally dirty and just old. Excursions are not available as advertised. There is access to black sand beach. But that is it. Nothing at the beach, no lighting at night. The poor pool attendant has to use a torch crooked in his neck to see what he is doing to clean the pool. Food is mediocre. It charges full tourist rate for not a lot.
Bottom do not bother.

Room tip: It is a lo g way to go for not a lot and does not match the photos.

The black sand beach is beautiful, though extremely hot in the daytime. The sunset/night sky are truly remarkable, the stars appear only a few feet away, simply beautiful. Horseback riding on beach was awesome. The resort staff was truly accommodating. The pool was cloudy from all the day pass users. But there’s NOTHING else nearby. The resort itself is so outdated I’d equate it to an old Motel 6. The room extremely disappointing. We had the 2-bedroom suite, didn’t know it had small spiral staircase leading to the second bedroom. Treacherous for my legally blind travel mate. The small refrigerator was rusty and microwave extremely small. We had to wrestle with the sliding door to go out to the balcony. The king bed was hard and covered in a plastic mattress pad. Yes we slept on a crib bed. I’d read that the rooms were being updated. However, we (5 couples) were not fortunate to get one of those although by Day 3 of 8, there were only 6 other people at best staying at the resort. The bathroom fixtures are dated to ‘80’s. The food and drinks were pretty good. Be prepared to eat the same things over and over unless you plan to travel the 30-45 minutes one way into David every day. Overall I would not stay again unless there was a complete makeover. I did enjoy the serenity of the area during the week days.

Room tip: Rent a car, pickup necessities prior to arrival. You will drive on poorly maintained roads.

Checking-In was a mess after the guy at the reception send us to 3 ! wrong rooms.
Lovely huge terrace, coffee machine- but no real cups. Service in the restaurant was very slow.
But the beach is really nice, very few people around, sunshade provided.
It is not a luxury place but we enjoyed our time.
