In a dry and dusty landscape the hotel an island green: gardens and a traditional links-style Gary Player Palmer designed golf course. The hotel is over 5km (3 miles) from the Essaouira harbor, you can walk into town via the golf course, dunes and beach or take advantage of the free shuttle bus which runs approximately every half hour through the day,
The hotel itself is smart and modern with interesting bits of art scattered around and three swimming pools: the main pool is described as heated (I suspect only by the sun shining on it), a "biological" pool complete with water flowing into it from a flower bed and the third is in the Spa area. The pools have plenty of sun beds and towels available and the main pool has a bar and cafe with staff that will server you as you chill.
Our 'superior' room was a good size with a central large bed with powered headboard. A good sized balcony had seating for 3 and a view of the golf course and sea. The bathroom had separate shower and loo, plus a separate built-in tiled bath between the entrance area and the bedroom.
We had half-board. The breakfast and dinner were both served in the same restaurant and comprised a large number of dishes served buffet style. At breakfast I particularly enjoyed the freshly made Moroccan Pancakes, in the evening there was always a couple of taglines which were rather nice. There are a couple of other restaurants you can choose to eat at extra cost, but some only open during the day or in the evening.
Drinks were extra and quite expensive at around £5 for a small glass of wine, but to be fair this kind of pricing seemed standard throughout Essaouira. There is a Carrefour supermarket on the edge of the town, so you can always go and buy your own bottles of wine for a similar price to a glass in the hotel.
In general the hotel is nicely appointed, but some bits were rather tired with rust and flaking paint.
Overall it was a good experience, but with little to do but sun yourself the temptation to top-up on the expensive drinks can be a challenge. It was a shame there wasn't much entertainment on site, some entertainment or music in the evenings would have been nice. There were a couple of activities you could book, like cooking, but they were all extra cost and fairly expensive.
