“LOCATION LOCATION !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

Although I have stayed at the Waldorf Hotel a few times before several years ago, given the arrival time of 0100 hrs after a long international flight with connections, I was a little "shocked" upon entering my hotel room - mainly at the "rough around the edges ( or well worn ) appearance.

However, after staying there in this large room on the top floor overlooking the hotel car-park, Leith St and the Georgetown skyline for 24 hours - during the next 4 or 5 days I stayed in the hotel, I felt that my room was a " home away from home ". The room was large with 2 double and comfortable beds complete with CLEAN sheets, the bathroom functional with hot showers and plenty of water pressure. A ceiling fan, although historic, performed well - combined with the air conditioning , gave you the opportunity to set your room temperature to a desired level for sleeping or for when re-entering your room in the heat of the day after a day of sight-seeing. TV with basic Malaysian channels and cool fresh drinking water provided as is soap but rather thread-bare towels.

Staff at reception always helpful , friendly and willing to to provide useful information.

Being located right in the historical Unesco listed heritage city, with attractions opposite the hotel, there are also great inexpensive restaurants nearby - particularly an Indian one on Penang Road - about 200 metres from the hotel. Close to public transport and the free " shuttle bus ".

Given the price of the hotel room at RM 69 , I could not fault the room if you are prepared to overlook that it is from the 70s. There are many more hotel options available nearby with prices starting at RM 100 and going to around the RM 240 but are they really any better ? From first hand experience, I know many are considerably worse. The Waldorf served the purpose well - by providing clean comfortable and quiet rooms at a most affordable price.

Room Tip: Rooms on 4th floor facing the front of the hotel and Leith St preferred.

Decided to take a chance on a budget hotel for the fun of it and had mixed feelings about it. Room rate was at a bargain basement price but I guess you get what you pay for. The hotel's facade reminds one of a 70's-built institution for retirees or looneys. One is then greeted to a bunch of old folks lounging in tatty sofas deliberating on what's going to happen next on the telly they're transfixed on. Onward and one will find the reception desk staffed by a grumpy elder lady who gets impatient when asked to repeat what she says. The hotel reeks of a musky, old stench reminiscent of my last community visit to an elder shelter. Into an old Schindler-branded lift I entered and up to Storey 1 of this old building. Greeted by an old sink and old mosaic flooring, I made my way to my room which was up some steps and past a hall. On opening the door I thought I was teleported to years bygone. An old ceiling fan, a room unit air-conditioner and all the old world amenities afforded at an inn were afforded. However, for its price, I must say I shouldn't be complaining. At all. And I forgot to mention FREE WIFI in rooms!

Room Tip: Be Nice, Speak Slowly. Hokkien/Cantonese helps.
