If you want to eat colonial food in a fine dining environment miles from civilization and with adventurous pricing this is the place for you. Otherwise go muck in with the locals in a Steamboat or Nasi Kandar restaurant in Tanah Rata. 10th of the price but no ambiance no white tablecloths no aircon and no alcohol. Up to you. Both options are excellent from a food quality perspective.

We ate in the dining room on our second evening in the CHR having eaten at Gonbei the first night.
Unfortunately we were disappointed with the experience overall.
The menu is largely european with a few asian twists but nothing very special. I had tomato and basil soup, served interestingly with a rather difficult to eat pie crust on top and a rather over salty, mean portion of too thin soup underneath.
The beef fillet was well cooked but the side dishes were dull.
2 x starters, 2 x mains, 1 x dessert and 1 x bottle of wine (a mediocre pinot noir) came in at $400 SGD.
Dinner in Gonbei was half the price and twice as good

If you are in Cameron Highlands in Malaysia - to make a quick getaway from the heavy traffic and noise as well as the hustle and bustle of the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur - between the states of Perak and Pahang, don't forget to drop by at a beautiful resort looking like a Tudor building from the exterior, and overlooking the popular golf course, for a meal be it breakfast, lunch or dinner.

What's so special? Oh , if it is the breakfast and you like an English breakfast and served in that way, you can have a range of pastries and breads, hot from the oven to start with after your fresh fruit juice . Then make a choice from the selection of the range of hot meals with sausages and the different jams especially the fresh strawberry jam made from the berries from the farms in the vicinity. Then you will see a trolley of assorted fruit on its rounds and all you have to do is make your pick. Of course, you have a choice of hot beverages . Just ask!

I had my dinners there a few times. I just love the English meals or occasionally local cuisine prepared in the Asian flavours to suit the Malaysian taste. I was surprised by the variety of vegetarian meal options - it's no trouble - in the ambience provided by the aesthetic decor, the vista windows as well as the soft background music and songs usually popular hits of yesteryears.

Of course, what takes me there ever so often is the service with a smile. Every waiter seems to know that a smile is very important especially when the resort has won many awards . For this, the management , Mr Kirinjit the Resort Manager and Peter , Head of Food and Beverage, need special mention for the standards expected from the staff.

Well as for dressing, you can go from casual to formal , if you so choose because this ambience is suitable for fine dining. A quick look around at dinner time showed tourists from all over the world dining in style from casual to formal attire.

Some tips: Keep room for their sinful mouth-watering desserts. I particularly liked the hot molten lava with ice-cream.

This restaurant I am talking about is Dining Room at YTL's Cameron Highlands Resort. I am wondering when I will be given the privilege of staying there especially to enjoy the cool mountain air in the 5 Best Tea Plantation Hotel in the World - CHR for short. I never tire of hill resorts that are clean and casual with good quality food and a serene ambience.

The food was wonderful and the service was very good! We took a package so it was good value. However if paying regular price, am not sure we would have eaten there twice!
