The room was very western and the hotel is very clean. However the reception speak very little english. It is perfectly located in front of the Onsen (hot springs) if the goal of the trip is only to relax. The breakfast is the typical japenese which I liked a lot but my friend did not. The restaurants around are as well very japanese and they do not speak english. It is a 15 minutes walk for the shopping street or more populated area of the town.

I stayed in Hotel Patio Dogo for two nights in December 2016. Mainly for business, but i had time to walk around the do a little bit of sightseeing. Overall, I like the hotel. It's tiny, but that is common in Japan, especially for a (low) price, but the location couldn't be better; the hotel is literally next to Dogo Onsen, and in the middle of touristic Dogo area. So you really don't spend any minute in the hotel, except for sleeping. And the hotel is clean enough to have a decent sleep. More details below.

Pros:
(1) Literally next to Dogo Onsen (the main public spa, whose building is considered the inspiration of Spirited Away) and in the middle of the Dogo touristic area. You can walk around Dogo area easily.
(2) Still location. It's 5 min walk to the Dogo stain/bus terminal. So you can take a limousine bus from Matsuyama airport to Dogo onsen station, and you just need to walk 5 min to the hotel. You can also take a train/bus to Matsuyama downtown from there.
(3) Not new or nice decor, but clean and functional.
(4) The staff was nice.
(5) Next to the hotel is a good bar serving local craft beers. The hotel has a nice restaurant serving Matsuyama specialty and Sushi.

Cons:
(1) Tiny, but that is common in Japan. The size is of the typical "business hotel" There is a bed, and bath/toilet combo, and nothing else (it's hard to open a large suitcase in the room).
(2) There is no Onsen (hot spa), but see Pros (1). This is not a problem.

our car wouldn't fit in their garage but they showed us the offsite parking nearby. The hotel had a very good English explanation of the etiquette for the bath house which was useful and provided kimonos and slippers as well. You can walk straight from the hotel to the onsen along with all the other bathers. There is a nice shopping mall nearby for Japanese tourists and we found a good restaurant nearby and also some supermarkets. We took the tram from near the mall to the castle - all signs in English so very easy to get around.

The hotel is just next to Dogo Onsen. . The room is very clean and the hotel offer free wifi. Paid car park (1000 yen per night) is just at the entrance of hotel. I did not try the breakfast in the hotel restaurant, which cost about 800 yen which seems to be a good value. Highly recommend for those who wants basic stay in this area but not traditional luxury hotel in private hot spring

If you blink there's a good chance you'll miss the entrance to Hotel Patio Dogo!!

The Tripadvisor photo above, beside the title of the hotel, is of the Dogo Onsen Bathhouse opposite the hotel.

The Lobby area is modern and bright...but once you open your room door on the upper floors, it's a different story.

It simply looks like a place to shower and sleep. No more, no less.

The amenities in the bathroom are very skimpy....almost rationed out. Especially compared to the other hotels we had stayed at during our group tour of Japan.

Breakfast in the one sushi restaurant/coffee shop served Japanese food only. No options. You get what's on the tray and that's your lot. It was OK but nothing to write home about.

As mentioned in the Title of my review....it is a hop, skip and a jump across the road to the Dogo Onsen Bathhouse...which is a 'Must Do' in Matsuyama. It is home to the oldest hot springs bath in Japan. It is said to have existed for over 3,000 years. Although the current buildings were completed in 1894. There is a set of baths reserved exclusively for the use of the Royal Family.

Yukatas and obis are provided in the hotel rooms. It is quite acceptable to walk outside or go to the Onsen wearing your hotel yukata. Everyone else does!!

Our stay was short and sweet...perhaps that's just as well.

Room Tip: Free wifi in lobby. Rooms do not have much of a scenic view.
