Visited Hakata on 12 Jan 2018. Alighted at Nakasu Kawabata Station and took a walk along the river towards Canal City only to see three stalls of which two were full :(
Made a trip to hakata thinking that this wouldbe the highlight of the trip but to great disappointment. Perhaps the stalls were gone due to winter? Or maybe I just didnt find the right place.

These small “restaurant” stalls are lined along the river and other small side streets of Fukuoka. They are an interesting way to take in the local food scene at night. However, a lot of what is served at each tent is the same and the prices are not cheap. So try to ask a local Japanese for a recommendation. It’s worth a try it once but other reviewers have noted you can find just as good quality at any number of restaurants in town.

Was expecting this to be one of the highlights of my trip, as I loved street food. I visited the yatai on the small island near the Nakasu-kawabata metro stop; there were about twenty clustered at the far end of the island from the station. Most of the stores had similar offerings: ramen, yakitori, and some other assorted dishes. But food quality itself isn't fantastic. The yatai themselves were small "huts" with very cramped seating, which I actually didn't mind because it fit the atmosphere, but also gave lots of pressure on the people manning the yatai to keep track of orders properly. Overall, I would recommend visiting the place once, but more for the atmosphere and novelty of it rather than the food itself.

saw only 2 roadside stores, which enclosed tentage... not really that appealing to enter. i would have though its grab-and-go, like skewers or other bite-size food, but appears to be more of ramen or full-meal types

For those who’s wanna try out Yatai foods in Fukuoka.. don’t waste your time and money, it’s not worth it at all, foods taste just normal but price are overcharged.. better try out at restaurant... nothing special except the price are highly charged... think twice before u go...
