Within an easy walk of JR Utsunomiya station. Note that there's another Toyoko property elsewhere in the city centre ("Toyoko Inn Tobu Utsunomiya-eki Nishi-guchi") - that one's close to Tōbu-Utsunomiya Station (run by a different railway company) and is NOT the property being reviewed here. The subject of this review is convenient specifically for the JR network, especially the Tōhoku Shinkansen line.
Typical Toyoko Inn rooms: small, clean, well-maintained. One of just a couple of Toyoko Inns I've seen so far with a separate breakfast area - unlike in most other branches (where an area contiguous with the lobby serves that purpose every morning) this one is in a separate room, with doors that are kept closed until the start of service, which means one can't stake out a table or start early with coffee. Queue early at peak breakfast time to ensure that you'll get a seat.
Interestingly, the hotel's next-door neighbour is an architectural and historic gem: the former Shinohara family residence, once owned by a merchant family whose factory (which was part of the broader compound) was right about where the Toyoko Inn itself now stands. Makes for an easy start (or end) to a day of sightseeing in the city, as it's just a few steps away.More
