We recently stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and could not have been happier.
We arrived around mid day and left our bags at the hotel, having been able to check in on arrival, but as normal not having access to our room until 1500.
To access the hotel, exit the railway station, turn right and follow the road around LaLa Square building which blocks the view of the hotel from the station. It is about a three minute walk.
As it happened a couple of English speaking German trainees were working at the hotel and were most obliging. The Japanese staff were wonderful and were able to communicate in English.
The room was typical Toyoko Inn, small exceptionally well maintained and functional. For our purposes they are perfect and the tariff reasonable.
The breakfast (included in all Toyoko Inns ) was probably the best we have encountered. Variety of foods which varied every day....congratulations!
All in all we rate this hotel highly.

I use this hotel a lot on business. It is clean, close to the station and the internet is free and very fast. there is also a free breakfast included in the room charge!!! On the downside, 2AM drunken guests can be a PITA.

Stayed at the TI in Utsunomiya for 3 weeks. It's a very standard no frills business hotel. Good for sleeping, taking a shower and a simple (but free?) breakfast in the morning.......and repeat......

The internet was so-so compared to other business hotels and the location convenient for the shinkansen and Lala Square shopping centre.

INTERNET:

I hold a Toyoko Inn Club Card and generally have pleasant stays. This night was pleasant, too, except for not having Internet access. Someone from the front desk volunteered to come to my room, bringing a PC laptop and a spare wireless router. Long story short, ① WiFi on the 5th floor had a signal, but wouldn't connect to anything. ② The LAN cable in my room wouldn't connect to my MacBook, Toyoko Inn's PC laptop, or the spare wireless router.

The next two hotels on this trip (including another Toyoko Inn) provided flawless Internet service.

Well, it wasn't the end of the world for me to do without email for a night, but under slightly different circumstances, this could have been troublesome.

On the bright side, the evening staff went out of their way to try to help.

BREAKFAST:

All Toyoko Inns provide a free buffet breakfast. They vary from place to place, and this one was above average. Unlike many Toyoko Inns where people sit in the lobby at round tables for 4 or at window-facing counters, Utsunomiya Ekimae has a separate dining room adjoining the lobby. I like the fact that the dining room tables are rectangular and arranged cafeteria-style. This makes it easier to accommodate everyone, and is more comfortable than intruding on people already sitting at a small round table.

Breakfast starts at 6:30 am on weekdays. Until then, doors to the dining room are closed and curtained. At the appointed time, the ladies in charge come out, thank people for their patience, bow in unison, and welcome everyone in. Five-star manners at budget hotel. I like that!

Room Tip: Next time, I might tell them in advance whether I need Internet or not.

Utsonomiya was the closest city from which we could take a train ride on the Yamanote JR line to Nikko. We have always like the Toyoko Inn chain which is consistent in cleanliness, quality, friendliness and convenient location. The room we had in this one seems bigger than other Toyoko Inns we have stayed in. It was so easy to walk everywhere. It's location close to the station makes lugging luggage easy, and there's so many choices of gyoza restaurants next to the station for which this city stamps its mark. The proximity of Lalaport mall and Paseo mall makes shopping convenient and we even managed to buy our trekking accessories from Xebio on 5/f of Lalaport and also walked to Wild-1, a chain with a big selection of outdoor sports needs on the other side of the station.

Room Tip: Twin bedded rooms are tighter than double room. Note there's only 3 hangers in each room
