The Landmark Tower is Japan’s tallest building at 295.8 m. and the third tallest structure in Japan. There is a five-star hotel on floors 49 to 70 and offices, restaurants and shops occupy the rest of it.
It is best known for the Sky Garden 360 degree viewing tower on the 69th floor that provides exceptional views of Yokohama bay and the surrounding areas. And on a clear day you can see Fuji-san.
The entrance fee was a 1000 yen the last time I went up it and the lift that takes you to the 69th floor was the fastest in the world when it was built. Amazingly it’s so controlled you do not get any perception if its speed apart from seeing the led display above the door rapidly accelerating and decelerating.
As well as the 360 degree viewing platform there is a good collection of tropical fish tanks and games for the kids, and a decent café area as well.
I’ve been up it a few times now and I always find the stuff you can see from the viewing deck interesting. And proof is that when I visited with my two teenage children, they were not bored and we were up there for about an hour..
But The Landmark Tower is also built in a complex that houses one of Japans upmarket shopping malls and restaurant complexes. The issue is that this is housed in the three basement levels and you may well miss it if you just go up the tower when getting off the end of the moving walkway from the local JR station.
