We stayed for one night after a long series of flights from London. Shuttle bus picked us up from Chitose. On arrival fantastic welcome, superb airy foyer and you leave your shoes at the entrance to the hotel. Very Japanese and you are encouraged to wear pyjamas! Well designed hotel with wooden floors, attentive staff and all that you would expect from an expensive high end onsen hotel. Buffet was top class and way above others we experienced in Japan. Good location nearby hotel with walks possible up behind the hotel and around the area. So why the four stars?
For the money the room was frankly disappointing. We were meant to be in a non smoking room but appeared to be put in some stark basement room with a distinct musty or smoky smell. Seems weird but the artistic effort in the lobbies and passageways did not extend to the room which was stark, devoid of any attractive features and appeared to more downmarket than other hotels we stayed in for considerably less cost. Others that stayed in better rooms had a more positive experience so if you go there try and avoid the gulag basement experience we had. Despite the room we had a good experience overall but unfortunately fell short of expectations as a luxury hotel stay.More
