Seizanyamato
Ranked #6 of 192 Hotels / Ryokan in Ito
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 26 December 2009

This was our first stay at Seizan Yamatokan and it was such a restful and relaxing time.
We have stayed in at least 6 ryokans over the years and Seizan is definitely one of those at the top of our list because of the ambience and a cut above some of the others.

Thanks to the Reservations Manager Ms Fujiko Horie who made all the arrangements for us via email (in English). Google “seizan yamatokan English” and you should be able to get to Seizan's English website. If you click on "voices" in the website, you will be able to read some more comments in english.

We stayed for 4 nights and really liked the restful, quiet warm ambience of this ryokan. The smiling staff and service is truly from the heart and that gives it that extra personal touch which you don’t always get from bigger establishments. The 12.5 mat room was spacious and the view overlooked the hills and seaside. A nice sense of openness and airiness which we really liked. The bathroom was pretty roomy with 2 basins.

If you don’t want big busloads or big groups, then this is the right place for couples. The private hotspring bath is available for reservation if you want more personal time with your loved one (the wooden tub is pretty large but take note the water seems hotter than the public bath). The public bath was never too crowded for comfort – so that’s the plus point about paying a higher rate for a cozier stay. The full range of toiletries is available so frankly, you don even need to bring anything like cleansers etc. We enjoyed the drinks at the room where you could use the massage chairs after your hot soak – the ice cold purplish red drink (I think its blueberry) is most refreshing and so is the other yellowish one (put a cube of ice in that one).

There's free Internet at the lobby - Apple PC.

We arrived on Dec 7th 2009 and were fortunate to have lovely weather and even some autumn foliage to view during our 4 days. The keiseki meals were served in the room and the dishes were delicious. For those who cant handle sashimi (we love it!!!) I am sure they can come up with alternative meals for your needs. That’s the great thing about this place – that personal touch. A free scoop of after dinner ice cream was served to us at the lobby as they used that time to bring out the futons for bedtime.

The shuttle bus runs pretty frequently to the town area JR station every half hour – last pickup back to the ryokan is 5pm or 5.30pm. So take a trip down to the JR station and walk through the little streets. We did that and even found a nice coffee joint called “Binya” – tasty coffee au lait from aromatic fresh coffee beans. Opposite is a shop where you can get great blueberry honey syrup and other flavors. To get to this street, you have to cross the street in front of the JR station and turn right, then left into one of the small streets. I believe there’s a little bakery there at the front of this street. The next time we visit, we hope to see more of the town.

We took the Narita Express from Narita airport to Tokyo station and transferred to the Superview Odoriko to Ito. The Superview has large windows and spacious - so if you can choose this, we would recommend it.

Ms Fujiko can recommend places for you to sightsee – she helped us with getting to the Atami Plum Garden. We had a pleasant walk in that garden one afternoon (you need to take the local train from Ito to Kinomiya station – a 20min ride or so). Turn right when you exit the Kinomiya station and keep walking up a gentle slope for about 15mins. You will see the sign “Atami Plum Garden” at a traffic light junction.

We truly enjoyed our stay and we will definitely recommend this ryokan to others. If you cant speak English, ask for Ms Fujiko – our superlady who will always have a special place in our hearts.
