Matsumoto is probably the coolest little city I've ever visited. The Toyoko in is located pretty much dead center from everything. I wasn't expecting to much being that it is a budget hotel, but for ~$50 I was quite pleased. Staff was friendly, Wifi was excellent, they served a Japanese style breakfast too. The bed was a bit hard, but like I said budget hotel. If I ever come back to Matsumoto, I will be staying here again!

Side note: My room was a smoking room, I'm not sure but they could all be that way.

Room Tip: You have a better chance of a nice view if you have a room that ends in 13 and is higher than the 6th floor.

We recently stayed at this hotel for 4 nights.
The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the east exit of the Matsumoto Station. It has a front to the main street and a back door (closer to the station) opening to a paved park like area.
Check in and out is fast and efficient, as all hotels in this chain (and generally in Japan) tend to be. The lack of English does not impede speed and efficiency, although some English was spoken here.
The room was clean, well laid out, and comfortable, particularly if you like hard beds.
Toyoko Inns are business hotels and are not designed to laze about.
Breakfast was the usual rice triangles (delicious) miso soup and a number of other dishes that were varied from day to day. Bread rolls, coffee etc were also available.
The area generally and the station area provides plenty of eating choices.
Matsumoto Castle, which is worth a visit is approx 10 minutes walk away with most of the main tourist spots closer. The clock museum is worth a visit.
To get a general look around Matsumoto, at a cheap price, get a day pass and use the little blue, red and orange buses that do various loops around the town.
All in all, a good business class hotel in a good location close to many attractions

Room Tip: Some of the rooms on the north side look into the side of the parking tower.

This clean, extremely reasonable and convenient hotel is a great choice if you are stopping over in Matsumoto. The hotel is a short walk from the station near a small park. The rooms are standard at all the hotels in this chain. Our double bed room was exactly the same as the one we stayed at last year in Yonago. It is well designed and includes all the amenities you might need: hair dryer, wi-fi, TV, even a pants press! There was a small hot water pot so we were able to make coffee before the breakfast was served. Breakfast was plentiful and healthy: nigiri, fruit, an assortment of vegetables, breads, miso soup, coffee, tea etc. Breakfast is included in the room rate. I highly recommend this chain if you need a scrupulously clean, friendly place to stay!

Service was highly efficient and polite, room was clean and functional. View of wall was less than interesting! The bed was extremely firm, which is probably fine if you are used to it! Washing machines and dryer were in the lobby (off to one side) and good value. Missed breakfast so not sure what that was like, into said miso soup, rice ball and green tea were on offer.......
