I had a great stay (two stays, really, broken up by a short trip) at the Boma. The location is convenient, the grounds are gorgeous, the pool is nice, and the food is quite good (standout for me was the avocado salad). Beds are quite firm. Staff were terrific in helping me plan daytrips. Breakfast is substantial and quite good (your choice of eggs, yogurt, fruit, muffins). Only thing that marred it for me is the bug spray that is sprayed daily in each room is pretty noxious. I took to asking that my room be skipped--my guess is a single spray can last 2-3 days easily.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review; your feedback is much appreciated.

We have noted your issue with the bug spray; unfortunately the spray is a necessary evil due to the possibility of mosquitoes (and more commonly lake flies). But we're glad that the staff stopped spraying as per your request: we'll usually try our best to conform to peoples requirements so long as they let us know what they need!

Best regards from all of us at The Boma.

The Boma is set in a beautiful garden full of colourful birds. There is a pretty pool, walks in the grounds, a craft shop and a children's pay area. Rooms are spacious and comfortable with African artefacts, fabrics and cushions scattered around. All have private verandas overlooking the gardens which are great for bird watching In early morning or dusk. The kitchen serves very good food at any hour of the day either in the restauarant area or around the pool. But the great strength of this hotel is the quality of customer care from every single member of staff, with particular helpful and friendly advice from the main desk. We lived in Uganda and stayed at The Boma when family visited us - it is well placed for visiting Lake Victoria, the Botanical Gardens and the zoo. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

We stayed with our family for a few days and concur with what most reviewers say about the Bomas food and service, they are very good! But I will focus this review on all the extras that nobody else has mentioned and that made our stay more enjoyable. We booked the Boma as we knew it had a swimming pool which we planned to relax around and keep the kids entertained. We did not know that they also had a sandpit and playground (with swings, slides, tree house and many toys like a special digging machine). They also have a free Pool table. These extras should be advertised as they really make a difference when traveling with children (and none of the other accommodations we stayed at in Uganda had playgrounds!)

The gardens are spectacular as has been mentioned in other reviews, but what surprised us were all the little private seating areas dotted around the compound (called ingelnooks on the sign on the path). The seating areas are great to relax in and waiters will serve you food and drinks here (though you probably should tell them where you are going as they are screened from the compound). We also had lunch in the big gazeebo hidden down in the garden, the nice thing about that is that you can relax here while the children play in the playground next door. We were also able to use our laptops for internet in some of these locations.

The swimming pool is not huge, but its big enough to do laps in and they have a small baby pool for children too. The pool has a selection of inflatable toys and flotation devices for families, again this is something not advertised but very useful. The free Pool table is located here and we had a few games on it.

Other things worth mentioning that made this different from other accommodations included the Library, they have lots of interesting coffee table books in the seating areas about Uganda and Africa that are interesting to read. There is also a small book-exchange where you can trade your novels. The small office area has a computer and photocopier/printer where we were able to print our boarding passes for the flight home. We had our own laptops for internet as there is free wifi, but people without can use the office for free. In the library they also have a selection of boardgames like Scrabble and Risk as well as some garden games like Boules and Croquet. Once again these are all free and unexpected services that are not mentioned!

The staff are helpful and friendly, and they have a nice minibus for the complimentary transfer to the airport, and this was the only vehicle we had in Uganda that had an a/c!

The menu is varied and the portions are well sized and consistent. Its not overly fancy food so dont expect any artistic flourishes on your plate like in some hotels, but its wholesome and tasty.

The actual rooms are practical and everything works and they are spotlessly clean. We noticed the head housekeeper would come and check after the maids had finished cleaning the rooms, so you dont get non functioning bulbs or broken fans here (something we experienced in a number of other places). Every room has a fan, a safe, a TV with some foreign channels. There is also a big TV in the bar which can be changed to any channel you ask for (which was handy for watching sports on).

All in all we were presently surprised with the extra services, and this definitely made a difference to us and I would recommend it for any families traveling with children.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2 and the budget room and had no complaints.

My review should be tempered by saying that we checked in to the Boma directly from the airport at 11pm and left before dawn the next morning. Our room(4) was fine. It was very clean and the bathroom was large and the shower hot. There is no air conditioning but there is a fan mounted on the wall. We did not have a chance to sample the food but the verandah set up for breakfast overlooking the pool, looked lovely. I would certainly stay here again if I needed somewhere close to the airport. Very convenient.

We stayed at The Boma as bookends to our Uganda trip. The grounds were nice from what we saw. We arrived at dusk the first night and left early the next morning the first time and arrived and left at night the second time. The staff was very nice and the internet was nice to have at that point in our trip. The food choice was varied and very nice. The big turnoff here was the room. It was very hot and we actually got very little if any sleep either night. There is no AC in the room and little if any ventilation. A small oscillation fan just did not cool the room enough. It was just miserable. Additionally, I thought the rooms could use a face lift. It is a letdown after walking through the nice grounds.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review; we appreciate your feedback.

We are glad that you enjoyed the grounds, the food and the free internet facility. However we note that you arrived late and departed early so unfortunately you were not able to make use of our other facilities like the swimming pool etc.

We apologise that you found the room too hot; occasionally the temperatures in Entebbe can be higher that normal (especially before the rains when the humidity can be a big factor).

We do have wall or ceiling mounted fans in all the rooms, and the windows can be opened for further ventilation. The original building here in The Boma was built in the 1940's, and we have kept the original design; indeed most houses in Uganda do not have a/c's.

I should point out that we do have many spare pedestal fans available upon request - our staff at reception would have been happy to provide you with an extra fan had they been notified of the problem. Though we have looked at the possibility of Air Conditioners in the rooms, we have found that the electricity supply here is too unpredictable to accommodate them. Its worth noting that while many of the larger hotels claim to have a/c's, you will often see reviews that complain about them not working (and then you have no ability to open windows for circulation).

We are sorry if you felt that the room need a facelift; we are constantly upgrading the rooms on rotation; including repainting, replacing linen & towels, etc - this is a year round task for us.

Let us know if you are coming back through Entebbe, and if so, we would do our best to meet your expectations.

Best regards,

The Boma - Management
