It is often said if it is cheap it's too good to be true. It was. We booked a ten day self catering holdiay in October 2011 at the Club Turquoise, Marmaris Turkey. We had not been to Turkey before but had heard stories of quiet family run restaurants where you could pick out your own fish - and enjoy good local cooked food but what a disappointment.
Club Turquoise is, put bluntly, a dump and should be raised to the ground. We were shown to our room on the second floor accesed via an outside stairway which faced a main road - constant traffic noise. The "free" aircon was governed so it was ,at best, cool. To open a window meant you could not sleep. Furnishings were tired and tatty, the beds like rocks, the whole demeanour depressing. Having complained at reception on arrival and asking to change rooms, we were told there were none and we would have to ask again the following day. We did so and were shown another room this time facing a "garden" . No noise but the balcony so small that you could not sit on it. Standard of the room the same. We returned to reception to be told if we wished to change rooms there was a charge of £20 - I jest not. We declined and checked out cutting our losses and booked into a nearby apartment for the remainder of our holdiay.
We had one bar meal on arrival ;a hamburger or so it was described on the menu - disgusting - served by a scruffy waiter. We attended the weclome meeting the following morning. My experence is that this usually takes place around the pool; not so as the music was so loud that the rep was inaudible so we adjourned to a nearby room with no aircon and sweated for an hour.
I would liken Marmaris to Blackpool but that may be insulting the good people of that resort. It is hell ; full of "Turkish" restaurants serving pizza, pasta, steak, fish and chips all the same no sign of local food. All are noisy often next door to karaoke bars. A plus however if you take a table fronting the promenade, you can people watch. We have never seen so may badly dressed, overweight tattooed Engish people - ugh - we were ashamed to be British.
On the plus side the Turkish people are kind and hospitable. Weather is wonderful and it is cheap; no nasty euro yet. So if you want a cheap holiday and you dont mind eating chips with everything and can ignore the majority of the tourist population of ill mannered loud lardies then Marmaris is for you. If you want to see the real Turkey give Marmaris a miss as too the ghastly Club Turquoise.
