It is often said if it is cheap it's too good to be true. It was. We booked a ten day self catering holdiay in October 2011 at the Club Turquoise, Marmaris Turkey. We had not been to Turkey before but had heard stories of quiet family run restaurants where you could pick out your own fish - and enjoy good local cooked food but what a disappointment.
Club Turquoise is, put bluntly, a dump and should be raised to the ground. We were shown to our room on the second floor accesed via an outside stairway which faced a main road - constant traffic noise. The "free" aircon was governed so it was ,at best, cool. To open a window meant you could not sleep. Furnishings were tired and tatty, the beds like rocks, the whole demeanour depressing. Having complained at reception on arrival and asking to change rooms, we were told there were none and we would have to ask again the following day. We did so and were shown another room this time facing a "garden" . No noise but the balcony so small that you could not sit on it. Standard of the room the same. We returned to reception to be told if we wished to change rooms there was a charge of £20 - I jest not. We declined and checked out cutting our losses and booked into a nearby apartment for the remainder of our holdiay.
We had one bar meal on arrival ;a hamburger or so it was described on the menu - disgusting - served by a scruffy waiter. We attended the weclome meeting the following morning. My experence is that this usually takes place around the pool; not so as the music was so loud that the rep was inaudible so we adjourned to a nearby room with no aircon and sweated for an hour.
I would liken Marmaris to Blackpool but that may be insulting the good people of that resort. It is hell ; full of "Turkish" restaurants serving pizza, pasta, steak, fish and chips all the same no sign of local food. All are noisy often next door to karaoke bars. A plus however if you take a table fronting the promenade, you can people watch. We have never seen so may badly dressed, overweight tattooed Engish people - ugh - we were ashamed to be British.
On the plus side the Turkish people are kind and hospitable. Weather is wonderful and it is cheap; no nasty euro yet. So if you want a cheap holiday and you dont mind eating chips with everything and can ignore the majority of the tourist population of ill mannered loud lardies then Marmaris is for you. If you want to see the real Turkey give Marmaris a miss as too the ghastly Club Turquoise.

Room Tip: Avoid all road facing rooms. Other rooms fine if facing the pool if you don't mind the noise.

This was my second trip to Mamaris and I was looking forward to the sun and bargains. However whilst I dont expect alot from self catering especially in Turkey I was quite optomistic about these apartments after reading the reviews. When we arrived and were shown our room we were very disappointed, it was spacious but had no balcony ..........or outside space, a small floor length window which open into a forest of bushes and a main road. The road was exceptionally busy even at midnight which was when we arrived. We went straight down to reception and asked to be moved, no unpacking or anything moved in the room. We were told that no we couldnt move, no rooms, we had to see the manager who wouldnt be back till monday(it was saturday) or see our rep in the morning and move to another hotel..... charming!!!!!
He also pointed to a large sign behind the desk that said any room change would incur a £20 fee, hmmmm how organised of them or does this happen with such regularity that they need to charge regularly.
When we saw the rep the next day she said she would speak to the manager the next day as no-one can be moved without his say so.
Monday came and we finally got a move to a room of similar size but with a small balcony but enough for us. All we wanted was to enjoy our morning cuppa in the early sunshine and then relax with a drink at sunset.
We were pestered several times for the fee of £20 but as we had spoken to several other people who had also been moved and had refused to pay we decided we were not going to give in to this money making sideline within the hotel.
The hotel has a bar which serves meals but a few hundred yards from the hotel you can get much nicer and better value for money meals etc. I also felt continuosly pester when around the pool to join in silly games which at 41yrs old is not my thing.
All said the hotel is ok, if you have young kids they will be entertained but the complex is run very tightly and if you upset one they all glare at you.
The location is good as you are at the top of Marmaris and there are alot of bars shops etc right on the doorstep which I think if you were based down by the marina you wouldnt discover.
However I wouldnt recommend the club turqiose as when meeting other travellers there seemed to be some much nicer and friendlier apartments to be had

Room Tip: B every sure to request a balcony, I know you may assume that in a hot country it would be a given b...

whatever you do,do not buy jewellery from the jewellers in the hotel,as i bought a bracelet that was supposed to 14kt gold, just got it valued to be told it was gold plated, but very deeply plated as it survives the gold acid test, but when the jeweller that i got to check it filed a tiny piece of one of the links then did the acid test again,it came back gold plated, there was a few of us who spent alot of money from the turkish green eyed chap, that call himself ernie,He is very good at what he does by that i mean conning people, The rooms where very dated and we had to put all our belongings back in our cases, because they had to spray the rooms with some sort of chemicals, the wiring was not good,or the showers, the only thing good was there bar staff, and reception staff, but we got conned and the greenery you see in the pictures,is what you see when you open your window, which made it impossible to sit on our balcony or any light to get in,beware the hotel turquoise,

Room Tip: choose 1 with no greenery around windows and balconys
