Review of Selimiye Mosque

Selimiye Mosque
Reviewed 24 September 2012

Come here if you like medieval architecture, mosaic and calmness. It's close to Mevlana Museum and can be easily reached in 2-3 minutes. Follow the rules for visitors: it's not allowed to take photos inside the mosque during the prayer, and you have to leave your shoes outside or put them on the shelf inside. Accessories for women such as shawls or headscarfs are available near the entrance.

Selimiye Mosque , located next to Mawlana Mausoleum, commissioned by son of Suleyman, II.Selim, then the Governor of Konya Region is a rare example for classical period Ottoman architecture for the region. The construction of the mosque started in 1558 and finished in 1576 after Selim became Sultan. The architect of the mosque is believed to be the infamous Mimar Sinan the head architect of the great period of Ottoman architecture . The mosque has three entrances one of which is the ornate marble maingate and a large dome surrounded by semi-domes and the interior is sumptuously decorated. The ornate altar is made of blue marble, the white minber (pulpit) is a fine example of marble craftsmanship has a spire resembling the Green Dome of the Mevlana Museum next door. The mosque has two minarets an indication of Ottoman Dynasty structure.
The mosque can be visited day time - off worship hours ( three times during day time -noon +apprx. 2,5 hrs+ apprx 2,5hrs) safe to go before noon no shorts for both men and women plus women should cover heads and arms . Shoes must be taken off ,could be kept in shoe shelves inside the mosque.
