“Beautiful hotel but poor staff”
Reviewed 1 January 2012

I arrived at the hotel in the middle of August 2010 ,with a good friend of mine.We pay for 7 days, and for some tips at the reception we recevied a better room. The hotel is clean, elegant, verry close to the sea, many pools(outside and inside),the water are clear, and at the pool, the number of chair are enough for everyone. The food was verry good and too much.
I recomend this hotel for the party, entertainement.
One bad point fot the animation team......are poor and they are friendly just with who they want to be.

In rest,go there because deservs.

We arrived in the early hours of Monday morning. Check in very quick and they upgraded us to a two room jacuzzi bungalow. We were a group of four with two teenagers so this put my mind at rest.
The hotel itself is positively palatial, excellent facilities, the spa is fab, the Thai girls who do the treatments very polite. The indoor pool large and warm during the conference tho heating was off before and after which was not quite so comfortable. The food was very nice, the salads lovely, soups very tasty, desserts scrummy. If you are looking for hot chips, spag bol and pizza you wont find it here but you can always go to the sunrise next door who apparently do some fab English food....
We had fantastic weather- hot sun every day so we spent our days on the beach. Paid for jetskis and flying fish ride, both 100 TkL which were fun. The photographers were abit of a pain for the girls .
Got a taxi to Side one day for our shopping, found the shopkeepers very polite and quite friendly.
Ok, having read previous reviews was a bit worried but on the whole found it a pleasant place to stay, rooms clean, mini bar stocked daily with coke, fanta and water. Grounds beautiful, very well maintained, food fine.Drinks ok though too strong - takes the enjoyment out of a G&T if it 90% gin!
Against: found the bar staff not rude but not warm and happy - cld be end of season but tough! Reception very changeabkle, some helpful others verging on rude. Pick up was 23.30, nearly had to pay $100 to check out late but in the end they charged me nothing but the young couple who were also with us were charged!
Spa expensive but they gave discount
There were only about 40 people in the hotel for the first two days then 1200 arrived for a doctors conference - very busy then, we were definitely second class guests although least the pool was warm then! They stayed until Saturday night. On Sunday, everything was being put away around us and we were moved along the beach so they cld collect the sun beds around us.
Entertainment was absolutely DIABOLICAL!!

Room Tip: The best rooms are in the hotel, lot more expensive but give you access to the VIP pools and restara...

We arrived at the airport at around 1 in the morning (turkish time) and we were told by thomas cook that the transfer would be an hour transfer, but due to all the drop offs and starlight being the very last drop off we were in the bus for around 2+ hours and it was just plain stressful.

Upon entering the hotel at the early hours the reception looked amazingly grand with well financed features and worthy of a five star rating. The hotel staff seemed rather quiet and we just put it down to the early hours of the morning and they may have been as fed up and tired as we were (we were wrong there).

The room was lovely (no kitchen area) but was cosy and the bathroom was nice and spacious with walk in wardrobe and a medium sized balcony. nice touches such as bathroom sets, dressing gowns and slippers ect... we were very pleased.

NOW THE DOWNSIDE STARTED.

In the morning we had no idea where anything was so we decided to go to the reception staff, they were still horrid and did not even look at you as they didnt want to speak to you, when we finally did flag them down they didn't understand English and we got very limited information out of them and in the end just had to investigate ourselves.

We slowly realised that 95% of the guests staying at this hotel are Russian (something which is not advertised or spoken to you about before going to the resort by Thomas cook), who are loud, ignorant and disrespectful to other non Russian guests. To get served at the bar was a nightmare for anyone who was not Russian as the Turkish staff (who speak great Russian by the way) always served the Russian people first. Russians do not understand the British concept of a line and pushed in at the bar shouting to be served. By the end you feel yourself turning Russian as you push and shout along with them.

The food was mediocre but there was a vast amount of choice and was well set out. There were many a la carte restaurants available and we chose the Chinese option. We got our own private room with a real Chinese feel to it and the food was amazing and FINALLY we got a very pleasant and nice ENGLISH speaking Turkish waiter.

The weather was miserable for the first four days so we didnt get to go out much and the entertainment was all in russian so we began to get cabin fever but once the sun came out we went on 2 excursions around turkey and suddenly the holiday seemed great.

VIP pool with cushioned seating is nice.

I could go on and on about this huge hotel but I would just like to warn English guests that if you go here you are made a second class citizen to the Russian guests and the staff are VERY rude at times.

Thomas Cook also didn't have us on their lists for transfer home on the day we were flying and if we hadn't have rang them to ask why they were half hour late to pick us up they would have forgotten us as they were just pulling up outside the airport...

Thomas Cook let us down dearly with this hotel.

Turkey was beautiful though and their were many positives that sometimes just felt a bit outweighed by the negatives... (go to turkey but not to this hotel!)

Please message me if you have further inquiries

I agree with all bad reviews.
- not 5 star
- very rude staff, can't speak English
- bungalows rooms are like 3 star hotel
- cleaning service very bad. Every day floor was dirty in the room, never wash bathroom, towels were missed, etc
- food very disapointed
- 90% rude Russian people
- Location - small poor village
We never gonna come back there and never gonna recommend that hotel !!!!!

Room Tip: Don't go to bungalows !!!!

The Starlight Hotel is part of a large complex which consists of the Starlight hotel and its sister hotel the Sunrise next door. Both hotels also have small villa style club rooms spread throughout the grounds. You can use the facilties in both hotels as there are no wristbands or anything to identify which hotel you are from even though one is 5 star and one is 4 star.

The good points of the hotel:
I cannot fault the actual hotel itself. It is very grand and spotless at all times. The rooms are a good size with big balconies and walk in wardrobes in all the rooms. There are slippers, robes, wine and fruit baskets provided in all the rooms for guests which was a nice welcoming touch.

There is quite a lot to do to keep you entertained i.e belly dancing lessons, pool games, zumba etc in the daytime and there is always a show at the ambitheatre at the sunrise in the evening and a disco at the Starlight or a live band etc. The entertainment was quite watchable considering some of the other hotels I have been to in Turkey for example Samba dancing shows and a chinese circus. The only problem is becuase the compex is so big is does take a while to walk from one hotel to the other if you want to watch a show. The starlight also has a bowling alley, games room and cinema.

The location of the hotel is good. It has its own private beach which is clean but stoney. Five minutes walk from the hotel there are lots of little shops and market stalls. You can also get the mini bus from the road outside the hotel to the local towns of Manavgat or Side.

The bar staff are very friendly and will try to serve you as quickly as possible. Most of them speak fairly good English and are always up for a litlle chat and banter at the bar

The bad points:
Like may other people have said this is a hotel primarily aimed at and visited by russians. I dont know why they choose to push in at dinner and pile their plates full of deserts so that there is none left for anyone else only to leave it all uneaten just because they are on holiday but unfortunately they do and it is hard not to get annoyed at the rudeness especially when there are so many with this being such a large hotel.

Dinner is set up as quite a strange arrangement with some food in the main dining room, some in the corridor and some outside so you may have to walk round with food on your plate getting cold before you can put a meal together. The food was exactly the same every night and quite nice but nothing special compared to other 5 star hotels I have stayed in. Also if you dont get to the dining room quite soon after dinner starts you will find it hard to get a table and even when you do find a table you will find it hard to get the attention of the waiters to get a cutlery or a drink.

The hotel grounds are very big and it takes a long time to walk round and it is easy to get lost. I would not want to stay in one of the club rooms as it would take ages just to walk to get to dinner.

The air conditioning is rubbish. It was on and working it just wasnt cold at all. I went in late September and imagine the heat in the rooms would be unbearable in hotter months as the air con is so poor.

The final minor gripe is that the pool bar staff only seem to like playing one CD so be prepared to hear Duck Sauce and Rhianna played over and over about 50 times a day while you are lying by the pool.

All in all this is a nice hotel in a good location but its just a little to big for me with too many people and far too many russians.
