We were having a residential conference with a one night stay starting from Friday.
The good stuff. For a start the location is superb, you get overwhelmed by the closeness to the sea and view when you are sipping their welcome drink. You can see Bawa style everywhere you go from exterior to interior of the hotel although it is quite old and in need of a renovation. The architecture of the hotel is a very refreshingly pleasant experience. Their staff is very attentive although they mixed up a room upgrade, but it was rectified very swiftly. The rooms are spacious enough, clean and complete with all standard facilities for a five star property. I relay liked the bathroom area together with the closet. From my experience with Jetwing Hotels all these are sort of a given. It's a pity they don't have more room types, meaning you either have a deluxe room or a saute.
But the real letdown is the food. We started with lunch on Friday which is average. But the dinner is below average specially with regard to Dessert spread. Okay, I can understand the weight-age for traditional Sri Lankan desserts when majority of your guests are foreigners. But I don't think even them enjoyed it. The dessert spread mainly consisted with Sri Lankan new year treats and your roadside sweet treats (of course made within the hotel).
But the real surprise was the lunch on Saturday, we were astonished to hear that there's no international buffet lunch on a Saturday at a five star hotel. Since we were a group we got a special limited buffet lunch, but in terms of a general guest you have to order from A la carte menu. Later we learned that its there policy and Saturday barbecue dinner and Sunday lunch are their main attractions in terms of food.
All in all, its an average experience and I can't understand the big fuss about this property other than Bawa architecture and location.
