On the face of it, Hotel Air Relax seems great. It looks smart and modern and neat. Trouble is, once you get into your room, you realise that there are some very annoying basic design flaws. The light control panel is on the other side of the room from the beds, and of the six lights on it, only three worked, the main overhead chandelier which is waaaay too bright, one wussy little one by the TV, and one on the bathroom ceiling. The light in the hallway of the room just outside the bathroom door, is on a seperate circuit, on a motion sensor, so when you get up to go to the loo in the middle of the night, your motion sets it off, waking up the other occupant. The walls of the bathroom (which is more or less the same size as the bedroom) are opaque glass, so you can’t put on any lights in there in the middle of the night for the same reason. Over my bed was a light fitting mere inches above my face, meaning I’d have cracked my head on it when I sat up in bed if I hadn’t unscrewed the shade and put it aside for the night. I don’t know why that light fitting was there in the first place, it was one of the lights that didn’t work, for the simple reason it didn’t have a bulb in it.

In the bathroom, the vast ceramic sink pedestal hadn’t been attached to the floor, so it rocked alarmingly when you used it, plus the light over the sink didn’t work, so if you wanted to shave, you had to do it backlit by the overhead light. There were three showers, a rainfall one in the shower cubicle that didn’t work, another smaller one beside it, plus a third in the large bath on the other side of the bathroom. The drainage in the shower cubicle was weird, the water flowed out of the cubicle, across the floor in front of the sink, and into a drain on the other side, meaning that anyone who walked into the bathroom while the shower was in use walked through a puddle. And the water drained slowly, meaning it backed up to the point that it flowed under the door into the toilet cubicle.

Also, if it was, as they claimed, a non-smoking room, why did it smell of cigarettes?

The whole place felt unfinished, especially as there was a pencil mark on the door indicating where a spyhole would be installed one day. It felt like no thought had gone into the design of the room, like it had been set up by 2nd year architecture students who’d never been in a hotel and didn't know how they are used. The place needs to take a leaf out of the book of, say, Ibis Ambassador style hotels for efficiency and good design.

Aside from that, comfy beds, quiet fridge and aircon, and a free 15 minute shuttle to the airport. Also, Lotte Mart has a very decent supermarket nearby, with a good range of take-out food and beer.

The hotel was good value for what we paid, but don't expect more than the basics:
- room smelt of smoke (or something really stale)
- was surprised by the automated phone-call half an hour before the 6am airport shuttle ride. This was well-intentioned, but it'd have been better to be expecting it
- the door to the room didn't really work that well - had to be shoved hard to open it
- [not serious!] found an (unused!) tampon under the mattress

I will start by saying that there really is no reason to stay in the area that this hotel is located in unless your travel revolves around Incheon airport. Yes there's train access to Seoul but it's a bit far and there are better options to base from. That said, IF you have an overnight connection, a late arrival, or morning departure from ICN, this is a great option. Don't go in expecting a 5 star resort, but if a clean hotel, convenient and free shuttle rides to and from the airport (I got picked up at 12:30 AM), quiet room, and comfortable bed are priorities, then this place should fit the bill nicely. And very reasonably priced. I will caveat that I am Korean and speak Korean so it probably helped - but from what I could gather basic English to communicate is available from the staff. Plenty to eat in the area, convenience stores and coffee shops around, etc. There's also a nice park / outdoor recreation area which should servce for a nice outdoor run and such if weather permits.

Stayed the night here so I can make an 7:30am flight. This hotel provides free shuttle service to/from the airport. Once I arrived at the airport, gave the hotel a call and they sent their van to pick me up. As for shuttles from the hotel to the airport, they run ever hour starting at 5am. It's about a 10 minute ride from hotel to T1.

As for the room, the room was very spacious, much bigger than I expected. The hotel is located in a nice area with plenty of restaurants around.

This is not a destination hotel because of its distance from the city of Seoul, but there are plenty of places to eat nearby, and the airport shuttle is quick and convenient. My room was actually much nicer than I anticipated, and the shower was fantastic (especially since the one I had for a few days prior was just a sprayer nozzle attached to the sink). You won't find a better hotel for the price if you're looking for somewhere to stay before a morning flight. However, if your flight out isn't until afternoon, I'd recommend staying in the city so you can have more evening activities. The train into the airport isn't too long of a ride.
