Having lived adjacent to this spectacular treasure for almost 20 years, it is ever changing, dynamic, educational and FREE. Huge inland sand dunes, the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly, blue alpine (a must for the Karner Blue), Gorgeous vistas, trees, trails, and in the Winter - cross country skiing. I believe the next closest ecosystem is in New Jersey. A rare treat anytime of the year and in our backyards.

I walked here in April, and it was a very pleasant, easy walk. You can make it as long or as short as you like. In April, it was covered in snow and was quite magical. At times you'd have no idea you were next to a busy road.
There is a landfill site at the far end, and it was actually quite interesting to see and learn how the land is used and affects the wildlife so makes this a plus.
Grantee it was cold and covered in snow, but the trails are very well kept that ticks shouldn't be a problem. Don't let scaremongering put you off a wonderful landscape to investigate and enjoy.

We arrived here after the visitor center had closed so we were only able to see the things outside. It was very nice. Our only problem was that we couldn't find a map posted to know how long the trails were. We began walking a trail but turned back because it was getting dark and we didn't know how long it was. It would be a great place to bring kids when the visitor center is open.

Before you ride, walk, snowshoe, run, or hike these trails - be very VERY aware of what ticks are and how lyme disease works. There is a great likelihood you will pick up ticks - large, the deer tick and the large one from Texas - when you visit this location. There is some beauty to this scrubby pre-historic land. The Albany Mayor's office and OGS are slowly taking it for more landfill dump, though. I used to be in favor of saving the pine bush but now, unfortunately, it is such a hazard to your health to attempt to utilize the trails, it is maybe a good idea to use it for the ever-increasing landfill.

Look. If you want some trails in the city to get to and hike, do it. But just know what you are doing with ticks and have Lyme disease awareness. I cannot think of even ONE hike where I didn't have ticks crawling on me.

Great place to visit and so close to everything. Trails are mostly easy especially if you stay on the side of the visitors center. We have always walked the trails on the opposite side. When you are in there it is hard to believe traffic is only a few minutes away.
