This place has one of the better burgers in Nahariys. If you go then you should try the Penguin burger. Good value and good service.

A 75 years restaurant which is one of the few that open on sturdays in this city. The Shinitzel is one of the best and is recommended, though it's very thin, service is fair', toilets clean. Average prices.

This cafe and restaurant Haus exists more than 70 years. The family Oppenheimer that came from Germany to escape the Nazi regim, opened this place with the intention to recreate in the Middle East the koffee haus Culture. The British military officers were seduced and composed the best clients. The food is a mixture of Mediterranean and German cuisine and very testy

We have just been to The Penguin with seven guests, five of them our boisterous grandchildren.

This was the fourth time in a couple of weeks and The Penguin never disappoints.
During the day you can get good coffee and cakes served on the verandah, watching the street scene, or go inside for one of an imaginative selection of main meals.

Some of the plus points: Unlike some of its competitors, The Penguin is free from often annoying loud music. Conversation is possible and business people drop in for a coffee and telephone chats about projects. The fact that some of the top local businessmen lunch here tells a story.

The staff speak good English and are professional. The tables can be moved together to cater for large parties - we sometimes go in a party of nine or ten people so this is useful.

There is usually some table space at The Penguin if you avoid the busy week-ends when this restaurant opens on Saturday when many others close. That's called customer service and is what a seaside resort needs.

These dishes were loved when this restaurant opened in a modest way 75 years ago - and are still served today:Penguin schnitzel, cabbage salad, goulash soup and our apple strudel, served with ice cream and whipped cream.

Today our grandchildren loved the meaty soups and my wife thought the cabbage salad wonderful, chopped and smothered in olive oil and lemon. This comes, before your order, with delightful bread sticks which the whole family buttered and loved - saving some to dip into their soups.

I chose Homemade Lasagna featuring Pasta leaves with mozzarella cheese, yellow cheese & ricotta,cheese- crusted in the oven & served with a sauce of choice - I chose yet more cheese! Unfortunately it was so filling I couldn't cope with one of the great deserts, like chocolate mouse which we have with coffee during the day.

My wife went for a well made chicken salad, so large a portion that our grandchildren ate a lot of it and there was some left over to take away in a box provided - we wasted nothing!

I had a grapefruit juice but the others had plain tap water so nine of us, one a toddler, ate well on a bill of 308 ILS.

The menu is large, imaginative and can be seen in English or Hebrew, useful for my American wife and myself and saving us from having our Israeli family translate.

Don't visit Nahariya without at least one visit to The Penguin, which has a good website with some history and menus in several languages.
