I have been coming and going to (the old and new) Ankermi since 2005, and it keeps feeling like coming home. The old Ankermi was a magic place with little more than bamboo huts on the beach where Kermi and Claudia welcomed you as their family. The new Ankermi still has the same atmosphere and hospitality; only the bungalows and the restaurant have been upgraded to the 21st century.
The new Ankermi is about 30km East from the city of Maumere and it very worthwhile the trip. As soon as you walk through the door, you feel like you have come to a secluded garden right from the fairy tails; with 5 little yellow bungalows facing the sea and rice fields in the middle, connecting them with the restaurant. Each bungalow faces the ocean and gives a perfect sunset over the bay of Maumere every day. In the distance you can see the islands of Pulau Babi and Pulau Besar where you can take diving or snorkeling trips. The diving in Maumere is great btw with everything you want withing a 1 hour boat ride; muck dive, a WWII ship rack, nice coral, you name it, it is there.
It must be said that although the bungalows are lovely (each offering a twin bed, a 'second floor' with a single bed overlooking the ocean, a fan, a open garden-like bathroom and a porch) they do not offer the '5 star resort' facilities like some people somehow still hope to find in Flores. Sorry guys, no hot water, massage showers, AC or other fancy things that some people feel that they can not live without. If you look for this kind of things, you better stay in Bali and not bother going to Flores. What you get is what you see; lovely service with a smile from a kind heart.
Services and facilities offered by Kermi, Claudia and their staff is complete; they lovely breakfast, help with planning trip in Flores, diving an snorkeling trips or just sitting down at night for a chat over dinner. This must be said; the food cooked at Ankermi might very well be the best in Flores. I should know; I've been allover the island and love to eat =).
I still come back and stay there around once every 4 months, and although I normally do not have the time to go diving and have to sit in meetings all day in the city of Maumere; the feeling of coming home every time you walk through the gate makes the entire trip worth it! If you haven't been to Ankermi, you have missed out on your Flores trip!
