We love Japanese but were really disappointed in the food. The atmosphere is not great either - cottage chairs and tables. Couldn't eat a couple of the dishes.

“Best Japanese Restaurant in Ubud!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2012

Minami is a truly world-class Japanese restaurant. The food is authentic,
beautifully presented and creatively prepared. The ambiance is a delightful mix of Bali and Japan. The service is attentive and courteous. We sampled a good selection of the menu from sushi and sashimi to the gyoza and tonkatsu along with a delicious futomaki and steamed fish. Every dish was excellent. Of the several Japanese restaurants we visited in and around Ubud, I would rate Minami as by far the best. It is absolutely worth the ride of 7 minutes from the middle of Ubud – it is across the road from the Neka Art Museum and to the right of Naughty Nuri’s (both also worth a visit – one for its art and gardens, the other for its really delicious ribs and knockout martinis even though it lacks all comforts.).

“Good Japanese food but place lacks authenticity”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2012

Chose a la carte (not fan of the 3 menus).

Food: I enjoyed it : beef tartare was delicious, beef tepanyaki as well.

But there is a real lack of authenticity in the decor and music!
Besides the entrance, the rest could be seen as an Italian restaurant (where is the Japanese / zen style), same for the garden. Music is even worst (and loud), not adapted at all for such a place (buena vista social club and some old french songs!).

Food matters most so I rate Good overall (3,5 stars).

“Amazing Japanese Tasting Experience in Bali for Foodies!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2012

This restaurant is for foodies! They have 3 tasting menus with a tasting of about 20 different dishes (8 courses and lots of small bites!) I did the Tasmanian Salmon course and they substituted one of the plates for another from a different tasting (salmon sushi for the grilled snapper and shrimp tempura).

This experience for about $45 was outstanding. The presentation of each plate. The freshness. The service. The quality. The care and love put into the food was obvious. Loved the little wooden boxes, thought I was getting a gift each course.

I wanted fresh delicious food with a great experience. I got it. The plum wine aperitif served with the tasting menu is so delicious. The manager took time to speak with me.

Only negatives were the music and told manager. Latin music and Crooners singing while in a Japanese restaurant in Bali seems odd.

Next time I will replace the potato salad with rice. Again, an odd dish to complement the entree at a Japanese restaurant.

Other than that, excellent dining experience and will be returning!
