Shiva Guest House is a homey budget place near Dashashvamedh Ghat, with rooms ranging from Rs. 200 (tiny, with no outside windows) to Rs. 850. Only three rooms have Ganges views. The place is clean and well-kept. Beds are pretty comfortable, at least the ones in the rooms I stayed in, though I didn’t look at the cheapest rooms. They aren’t too thin, which is often the case for the budget places in this area. The family that runs it is friendly and caring. Shiva spent six months in Holland and learned a lot about running a guest house while he was there. It’s especially popular with Japanese and Korean people. For the most part it’s quiet, especially at night. The air is good as it’s away from the street. They have a washing machine for laundry. I didn’t try the rooftop restaurant, though they shared some of their own food with me as I am pure vegetarian and the rooftop restaurant isn’t.
The free wifi is limited to certain areas, not accessible from most rooms. Approach to the hotel is a bit challenging, especially as they recently dug up the lanes to install new sewer pipes, and the paving stones haven't been properly replaced. Also, the lanes are pretty dirty although the people from this guest house endeavor to keep their gali clean, which is certainly not usual in Varanasi.
