The name literally means Big Mountain, and rightly so. The gazibo offers a spectacular view of Ooty and Conoor and all the Nilgiri hills on all four directions. A very nice place to visit.
A very good place to take pictures of hills, sky, clouds and of course the Ooty town. What you wear when you go up to a peak is important. Jeans/trousers recommended for women. Please make sure you carry umbrellas, rain coat/wind breaker, water proof back packs etc. Also wear sneakers with good grips or hiking boots if you are interested in taking pictures; I bet you will be tempted to photograph the panoramic views. There is a nominal fee for visitors and still cameras. While you are driving up to this peak, do not forget to stop near a few bends where sufficient parking space is available on shoulders. you may get different or even better views of the same places.
Since our last visit twenty five years ago there has been remarkable improvements in roads, and onsite facilities, credit to the Tamil Nadu Government. The climb uphill is gentle on paved pathways. At the peak, there are tea shops and eateries. Toilet facility is also available. Being a festive day, the Policemen were doing a commendable job controlling the crowds. A must do visit in Ooty....to witness the panoramic views of the valleys lying below and far in the distance.
The views are decent, there are walkable forest trails all around.. Good place to soedn 30-45 mins. Please carry your oen water and refreshments, not many options available.
It is the fourth highest peak in South India next to Anamudi, Mannamalai and Meesapulimala. Must visit. The area surrounding Doddabetta is mostly forested. Sholas cover the hollows of its slopes. Slightly stunted, rhododendron trees, in the midst of thick coarse grass, flowering sub-alpine shrubs and herbs are common, even very near the peak. Timing : Mon-Sun : 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
