Well worth a trip to the top to see the views across Udaipur via the cable cars. Temple at the top and the remains of a palace; you can also walk along the city walls.

This is a small hill with a temple on top. The city view from top of this hill is marvelous. You can go to this place in mornings, you can take gondola or climb.

A temple on the top & Eklingji fort are the places to visit on Machla Magra which means "a hillock like a fish".A privately run ropeway takes one to the top with all sort of wrong info to extract the money fron the gullible tourists. Take the least expensive ride.

While cruising Lake Pichola, look up the hill behind Jagmandir Island (Octopussy's house), and you'll see an old fort in ruins and two white cupolas. The location is called Machla Magri or Fish Hill. I took a tuk-tuk to this place from the Jagdish Temple for 50 rupees. Reaching there under 10 minutes, I realized the fare was a ripoff. The journey couldn't be more than 2 km!

The base of the hill is a landscaped garden called Deen Dayal Park. From here, you can get a great view of Jagmandir Island and the City Palace. It's a well-maintained park, good for a stroll and well worth the pittance you pay as entry fees. However, the real attraction of the place is the cable car to the top of the hill and the views from there. A return ticket is Rs.60 per person. It's supposed to open at 8 AM. Go early and you could get a gondola all to yourself, maybe not going up, but quite probably coming down.

Out top, you can walk right for the cafe and the two white cupolas, or left for a temple and the fort ruins. The fort is closed and there's no visible way to sneak in, but you can still climb the outer wall and get a close-up of the impressive wooden gate... full of graffiti.

From the fort walls, you get a great view of the whole city. There's also a lookout point to the left of the fort that's actually a mosque. The signs are all in Arabic and Hindi. One says "Holy place. Take off your shoes and keep your head covered." No English here. Anyway, from what I could understand, it's the shrine of an artillery gunner, probably with the Indian Army, who became a saint after retirement.

On the other side of the cafe, more fort walls and more city views, this time of the City Palace! Use a long zoom for some fantastic shots from high. Take a leisurely walk to the two cupolas. If you like, you can walk down the hill and waste your return ticket. As a reward for doing so, you get to visit, halfway down, an old tower that was probably a hunting lookout. The path down leads straight to another of Udaipur's famous lakes, the Dudh Talai, literally translated as Milk Pond(?)

I went in the morning, but the cafe has a "sunset point." My loss.
