Amazing architectural gem with delightful courtyards, rooftop views of the fort and our room, 107, was an Ali Baba delight with four poster bed, cut out alcoves in block stonework, 300 year old room, large modern bathroom with plenty of hot water, set in the second courtyard – much quieter. Having said that, this is a converted building into the 20th century with all the problems inherent with running new cables and pipework for 21st century guests, while at the same time retaining the architectural integrity of the place. It is perfectly situated for the hustle and bustle of the market square and the fort on top of the hill is only a 50INR tuk-tuk ride away (40p.). Breakfast was served on the rooftop terrace – simple but adequate
The negatives are that our room would not last 10 seconds in “Four in a Bed” – cleaning appeared to stop at eye level and without looking for dust, it was unavoidable, but the room is stone floored and sandstone block walls and domed ceiling. The electric sockets were a bit hit and miss, sometimes the plug just fell out of the fitting. The free wi-fi was non-existent but the receptionist allowed us free access to his computer to access our internet and because of the time difference it didn’t affect us greatly. There were no tea making facilities in the room but once again the staff came to our rescue with a kettle, mugs, tea and coffee for the early morning cuppa. This is a great hotel for above basic 3*. Once again though, the friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff more than made up for the oddities. Also, we were going on a desert safari and not intending to be met for our jeeps until after 3.00 p.m. and the hotel allowed us to check out late so we could freshen up before our overnight in the desert. Would we stay here again by choice – if in the area, yes.
