Mascot Hotel is a government-run (Kerala Tourism) heritage hotel , with parts of it dating from the time of the British colonial period. Consequently it offers large rooms with high ceilings rather than the normal matchbox rooms of more modern hotels. The beds were comfortable, and so were the large sofas, the table, the light fixtures etc. One very convenient facility is that there was a console in my room next to the bed from where all the electrical connections in the room could be controlled i.e. the lights, the fan, the air-conditioner, the TV etc. However, I was informed by some of my fellow conference delegates that in some of their rooms many of the buttons on this console did not work though that was not my experience. There is a safety box and refrigerator in the room. Free wifi facility was also available. The hotel is also centrally located in Trivandrum and therefore has easy access to tourist spots. A cafe just outside the hotel proper, but on the same grounds, offers typical Kerala dishes and other snacks.
On the not-so-good side, some of the staff do not seem to be very competent. The one who took me to my room, for example, did not seem to know how to use the electronic card key in turning on the electricity in the room and I had to discover how to do it myself. I found a dead cockroach in my room, which of course indicates that though pest control is being regularly carried out, the housekeeping staff were negligent in cleaning the room. I did not find a card (as is found in most hotels) that can be hung on the outside of the door indicating whether one wanted one’s room to be cleaned or not to be disturbed – the latter being an important way of indicating that one’s room is not to be opened in one’s absence.
As for the food, since I was at a conference I did not experience the regular menu items. However, with regard to the breakfast buffet which was common for all hotel guests, my experience was not so great. For instance, the chutney for the idli/vada was certainly not up to Kerala standards. The only juice offered was some grape juice and a milk shake. There were no specifically Kerala dishes but just the general kind of buffet menu that one finds all over India. In general the breakfast buffet was not up to the standard of good southern hotels.
The conference facilities were also just average. The hall in which the main sessions were held was hot – perhaps because though there was place for everyone to sit, the air conditioners could not cope with the numbers. In fact delegates found it cooler in the lobby outside the conference hall. The food service was served in a manner that made it difficult for people to line up and collect their food. The facility for receipt of used plates was certainly not up to the mark of a 4-star hotel.
I checked the prices with comparable hotels in Trivandrum and found that the Mascot Hotel room price is above the average of similar type hotels in the area.

As we were roaming around Trivandrum on an hot afternoon, we came across Hotel Mascot where we hopped in to refresh. Upon reaching the hotel, wanted to check out lunch options and there was buffet lunch available. Good number of vegetarian dishes spread made it more delightful. Their Sambar and Kerala style poriyal stood out. And their Jamoons savored with Vanilla ice cream was heavenly. One thing they can improve upon is the frequency of cleaning their wash rooms.

This old hotel is government run, close to the city centre and local amenities, quiet and a bit palatial (old colonial) and quaint in character. The rooms are extremely spacious and the free wifi works well throughout the hotel. The restaurant is also on a big scale and the food is well presented and tasty, though not outstanding. The breakfast choices were quite varied and as it was not very busy we were able to serve ourselves from the buffet without delay. The staff were very helpful, polite and efficient and the price for both the rooms and the food represented quite good, but not excellent, value. The only disappointment was that the swimming pool was closed for maintenance but it looked good. They seem to be in the process of refurbishing some of the older rooms but ours were fine.

Room Tip: Be sure to book a room that has already been refurbished

Rooms are spacious. Mascot hotel is at the heart of the city in Thiruvananthapuram (trivandrum) capital of Kerala.Rooms are spacious. It is about 4 miles from the airport. This is a publically owned majestic hotel in the city. The atmosphere and ambience are great. The food is the best in the city, for about £10, one can have a vast variety of tasty food though coconut sweet is my favourite.

Room Tip: Choose the ones facing the garden.
