My partner and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights during our trip to India. The location is perfect -it's right in the heart of Fort Kochi, making it very easy to wander the streets around (and watch the Chinese Fishing Nets in action). The staff were very kind and hospitable, making us feel very welcome and relaxed. While staying at the hotel, we made the most of their facilities including free yoga on the rooftop in the morning, some exceptional ayurvedic massages, the lovely swimming pool and the outstanding restaurant. The hotel staff also helped to organise a guide to show us around Kochi one day, and various drivers to take us to the airport and to Alleppey for the backwater trips.

To begin, the hotel. Nestled in the heart of Fort Kochi - a surprisingly beautiful gem in a city that isn't exactly a looker - the hotel is excellently located near the Chinese Fishing Nets, local market and other attractions. The OHH is a gorgeous colonial building that the pictures do not do justice. We had a garden bungalow that was cosy, comfortable and clean. The showers are outdoors (though completely private) which I loved, though this may not be for everyone. The rooms in the main building have indoor showers. This is not a big hotel, and feels very cosy. It has a beautiful garden with a really good pool. In the evenings dinner can be served in the garden with live - but quiet - music, making for a gorgeous setting. The food is outstanding - really - and, if you're a luish like me, you will be pleased to know that they serve beer and a small selection of (decent) wine. This is a particularly important note given the severe licensing restrictions on alcohol across Kerala. For all of these points alone I would highly recommend a visit tot the OHH. It is, however, the service that sets this hotel apart. In general terms it was friendly, welcoming and genuinely warm at all times, but without ever feeling in any way intrusive. However, there is one particular tale that sums up the service perfectly. Having had to change our travel plans only a few days before departure (due to the ongoing problems in the Darjeeling Hills) we asked in advance if the hotel could arrange not only a pick-up from Kochi airport, but also a series of taxis to pick-up and drop-off at our other accommodation throughout Kerala. Jude - our contact at OHH - arranged all of this for us. Not only did he do this with no fuss whatsoever, he then kept in regular contact with me and the various taxi drivers throughout the whole of the following week to make sure that we arrived at our destinations safely and on time. This culminated in him coordinating a very complex, 7 hour 'dash' to the airport from Munnar that could so easily have resulted in us missing our flight if it were not for Jude. We hadn't accounted for our day of departure being on a national holiday, and the traffic was horrendous. Jude coordinated conversations and plans across two hotels and two drivers (with an hilarious handover at a rendezvous point that resembled a hostage handover from the movies with us and our luggage being rapidly bundled from one car to another). We made our flight with 15 minutes to spare (with, of course, one final phone call from Jude to check that we had made it). Without him, we would have been stranded somewhere in the middle of Kerala I am sure, and we cannot thank him enough for his Herculean efforts on our behalf. We had left the OHH several days earlier by this point, and Jude had no obligation or incentive to help as much as he did. This is simply a case of a very kind person doing a very kind thing. If his manager is reading this, Jude deserves a pat on the back, a high-five and a bonus. He earned all three. Go and stay at this hotel. Immediately.

The Old Harbour is the best hotel in Fort Kochi. Its located close to the sea front in a beautiful old Portuguese building with a swimming pool in the gardens. We stayed in one of the cottage rooms which have a terrace onto the garden and an outdoor shower. The food is amazing, the chef made some beautiful Keralean curries which were so tasty and there are Western options if you prefer. You can dine in the lovely garden and they have some live local music, but it's tasteful and quiet not a tourist show. They also own a cafe close by where we went for lunch which had good coffee and food. The staff at the hotel are all lovely and friendly. Special mention to Jude who contacted us by email as soon as we booked the hotel offering assistance with transfers and anything else we required. He was an absolute star organising taxis to Alleppey and to Munnar and being in contact to make sure everything went smoothly. He even contacted our next hotel to make sure our reservation was confirmed. When we had some logistical challenges due to a public holiday after we'd left their hotel, he still helped coordinate our taxi to make sure we made our flight. Truly 5 star service.

This hotel is small (12 rooms) with very friendly staff, fabulous old style rooms, and a great food. Located near the old harbour fort it is easy to walk around interesting buildings and shops, or stroll to the waters edge. This may well be the best hotel I have ever stayed in. Boutique with 5 stars.

Open air seating, live music, relaxed atmosphere, excellent food, prompt and courteous service! What else could one expect from a restaurant! The hotel has an old world charm around it and is located right next to the famous Chinese fishing nets. I would strongly recommend that even if you are not staying at the hotel, make sure to have dinner there.

Room Tip: If a choice is available, which is highly unlikely in December - January, look at the options and decide accordingly.
