“Good if you don't use the buffet restaurant”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

We have just returned from 6 weeks in Sharm and stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks of our stay.
Bottom line is that of the 3 hotels we stayed in, this was the best and if you have children or really like children, it would be even better. We don't, being older but we survived and actually enjoyed it despite them...and there were a lot!

The hotel was probably the cleanest (or spent a lot of effort trying to be) we have ever stayed in. They expend considerable resources in every area monitoring the state of the floors in particular and the cleaners walked about all the time, sweeping and mopping spills in the restaurants, bars and outside areas. The room attendant was equally superb and did a thorough job every day.

The food in the smaller 3 restaurants (Asian, Mediterranean and Italian) was all good and especially that prepared by the Indian and Chinese chefs in the Asian was superb. Strawberries in the Italian and food salad dressings in all the restaurants were also pluses for us.
The main buffet was a let down though, Although the salad bar there was good, the rest of the food was generally poor and not warm...how you can bring out new dishes of "hot" food which are cold is beyond me but they managed.

The drinks are as said by others...wine OK and rum was OK but gin and vodka are to be avoided. Staff were great though and service was generally very good with waiters getting better as they got to know you and red wine would automatically appear if by magic once they knew our likings.

Pools are obviously abundant and the heated ones were reasonable even in January. Also plenty of easy entry access steps or slopes for us older people. The ability to use the beach and sea at the Beach Albatros Hotel is also nice although perhaps a slightly nicer beach bar/eating area for Aqua Blu guests would be a plus.

We will probably go back as we liked many things about the hotel. If they introduced some quieter Adults Only areas, especially a bar, it would be a big plus for us! It was definitely the best hotel we stayed at in Sharm.

Room Tip: Blocks 4 and 5 are the quietest as further away from bars and restaurants.

Our room was in block 15. Depending on what you want for your holiday we either ended up with one of the better rooms or one of the worst. We took it to be the better as although we had an extra four or five minute walk to get to the main building, it was in its own little complex, with own pool and own bar, away from the noise and screeches of the main pool. You even had your own guard to escort you across the road to get through the gates. If you want more of a quiet holiday, ask for block 15.

Our room was pleasant and definitely large enough.  We had a nice view from our balcony onto the private pool which was quiet and peaceful and if required a bar was just downstairs should anyone from our block want a drink and didn't want to have to walk all the way back to the main complex. The one downside roomwise was despite the enormous bathroom, there was no bathtub. Just a shower which is not what I personally want when on holiday as it can be more of luxury to relax in a bath after sunbathing, rather than just standing up showering.

The hot water for the shower took whole minutes to eventually run through warm enough for you to stand in. So much so on the first attempt we had to call reception to ask if there was a problem with the plumbing.  Plus, there was no shelf inside the shower to hold any bottles in. All our toiletries had to be stood in the actual shower basin, as the side lip of the shower bowl was slanted. They do sound inconsequential and nit picky, but it really should be better than that.

Unfortunately the niceties end there. The food was appalling. I don't mean inedible, but for the 4* status the hotel has, the food was shocking! The way to sum it up as my boyfriend put it was, "I'm still hungry, but I don't want anything else...". The A la Carte restaurants are non existent. They are just separated restaurants from the larger Cave du Roi restaurant, which all serve the same self service buffet foods. Perhaps I was just expecting too much but A la Carte to me means you are seated by your waiter, who takes an order from you after you have seen the menu, and it will be cooked and brought to you. This was not the case in any of the supposed A la Carte restaurants. It is all buffet food, and the food is astoundingly sub standard.  There was nothing remotely appetising or varied about the food. Soggy overcooked broccoli and white rice or  chips, we're served as sides with every meal, and when I went to get fruit for breakfast, the apples were swimming in brown bruised juice, and clearly had been put out for the third day running. After a week we really had had enough of the food and we still had another 5 days left. We barely ate anything and dreaded dinner time. You normally want to look forward to dinner time in an evening, and get dressed up. After a week, we just didn't bother. We spent all of 10 mins in the restaurant,  just perfunctorily eating something. Which brings me onto the next big downside: This place is not the place where you do need to dress for dinner. Think Benidorm but closer to the pyramids, and that sums up what you can expect. To put this into perspective, whilst chilling with our holiday reps one day (we liked our reps, Kareem and Adel, and went out on lots of excursions and to restaurant and bars with them to escape the mind numbing entertainment in the hotel), one women waddled over to the table saying she needed to ask them something and, I swear I thought she was joking asked  " Yeah mate, can you tell me where the nearest McDonalds is?" . That sort of sums it up, although in all fairness the food in McDonalds is probably better than the hotel's .

Drinks wise, when asking reception if any bar in particular served cocktails and being given a frosty response of "um all of them..." I asked for a Piña Colada. My usual Cosmpolitan drink was not on the cocktails list (which consisted of 5 drinks in total - one of which was a vodka and orange - not REALLY a cocktail). The bar man sloshed rum into a cardboard cup, topped nearly to the brim with fruit juice and then grabbed a tin of coconut milk which he poured over the top of the mixture. It curdled straight away, and me thinking he was going to shake it for me, was astounded when he passed me a straw and said the you go, you can stir it yourself yes? That is NOT a cocktail bar, and if you read anything from the website saying they do cocktails. They don't.

What HAS to be the worst by far though was the Animation Team. I used to work as nets staff myself, and know what normally is required, but THIS lot were without a doubt the most pitifully bad team I have ever seen. 2 boys and 2 girls -both of which were miserable as sin. And I mean miserable!! If you want  a job where you can get away with a face like sucking  lemons, entertainment is probably not for you! There was one guy with a bit of pizzaz but the others had not one shred of talent between them and it was painful to watch their shows. Don't expect any entertainment from them, day or night. There were atrocious.  Funnily enough I am writing this review during the actually entertainment show. We were SO desperate for amusement we thought would be more fun to write a review than contemplate another night of complete rubbish. Believe me! It's that bad!!!!

When you arrive the hotel was not horrific but after 7days home was looking more and more inviting, and we were stopping 11 nights.  We were bored senseless every evening and our stomachs were crying with despair at being fed the same unvaried stodge (ignore the "nationality themed buffets" that allegedly change every night) night after night.

The one redeeming feature of the hotel was the rooms mercifully were clean and amply sized, and the pool areas were good sized, other than that it was depressingly bad and we won't be returning.

We stayed at the aqua blu for the first time from12 th feb, it was brilliant!
We were originally put into a family room which overlooked the busy main road and was situated above a bar which played very loud music until 5am- not much good when you have a 7 year old, 5 year old and a 5 month baby. We asked to move the next morning and by lunchtime we were in a gorgeous room overlooking the aqua park. The food was fabulous, even my fussy eater kids were well catered for. The beer is fine but the spirits and wine are to avoided, just take some from the plane and use the mixers there. The glass bottom boat trip was great but dont take a buggy if you have a baby as there are loads of steps and then you walk along a floating pontoon to get onto the boat-leaving the buggy behind on the shore! It was safe enough but if I had known I would have left it at the hotel. The dolphin show is good value for money, my kids loved it. Staff were brilliant and the breakfast pancakes are delicious. We are hoping to return next February and stay for longer than a week- its not long enough. The aqua park was quite quiet and a few slides were closed for refurbishment but otherwise we had a great time. Thanks aqua blu :-)

We stayed a week here, first week in Feb after a Red Sea Cruise, primarily for just a weeks rest. To us it didn't feel as if you were in Egypt. Sharm exists as a man-made resort for the sun. There is nowhere of historical interest within driving distance of the resort. If you want to visit Cairo or Luxor then a flight is involved.
Our room was large but not necessarily comfortably furnished. We had a view over a side access road. The whole room stunk of cigarette smoke, mainly in the bathroom. It would appear that smoking is allowed virtually everywhere in the complex. The bathroom tiles would have benefited from a complete wipe down. With the condensation from a shower they looked quite grimey. All cleaners that we saw were young males. Both beds consisted of a top & bottom sheet and a blanket. One night we had a sheet on top which hid the dirty stains on the blankets but then the next night it disappeared. The shower curtain was too short so bathroom floor was regularly sodden. We did have a fridge and 2 bottles of water every day were left in it.
Food was plentiful but not always varied. The Meditteranean restaurant main course was identical 2 nights running. All restaurants were self-service.The largest one, central, within the waterpark tried to enforce long trousers in the men at dinner but we saw many in shorts. It was very noisy and we only ate one evening there. There is a large presence of Russians who seem to have taken a holiday vow of eating as much as they can! The water park itself,of which guests have access to, would suit any family with young children. We always found sunbeds and a couple of quieter pools with no childrens activities which was good for the more mature.Health and safety would have had a field day with the cleaners who moped our tiled staircase from our room which was like a skating rink and you gripped the rail for dear life when descending.Beware, the 2 nearby mosques call out several times of the day and start VERY early on a friday morning. There was very little entertainment laid on in the evenings. If you're expecting 5 stars remember that they are 5 Egyptian stars - a world away from UK ones. Also, you are visiting a resort in Sharm, it doesn't feel like Egypt, you could be in Spain. A walk to the beach took less than 15mins, a bus is available. It's a manmade beach at the bottom of a very steep cliff but a lift is available.Aqua Blu guests could get inclusive snacks/drinks but had to walk to the farthest end of the beach. It also ponged a bit down there.
Overall - we wouldn't stay again but if you want your kids to enjoy water play or young teenagers to use the slides there's alot to keep them busy.More suitable for families who are prepared to give up some quality for happy kids.
