I ate at the Diving Horse several times this past summer, and I will continue to come back when I am Down the Shore. There are two different seating atmospheres - home-style/casual on large tables outside where you cozy up with others, or more traditional seating inside. On each occasion I ate inside. If you've read other reviews you know the portions are not large. However, the Diving Horse is more of a fine dining (don't mistake for "stuffy") experience and as such the portions tend to be more "normal" sized. I prefer to walk away from a meal satisfied, not stuffed. The menu is online (with prices), so the expense should not come as a surprise. Also, the place is BYOB (again as stated on the website) so you know going in you have to come prepared - which is great. The food was awesome - from entrees to desserts! The service was friendly, and the food was prepared and served in a reasonable amount of time. Treat yourself to the Diving Horse - at least once!

The food and service is excellent but the price was outrageous. I'm glad we ate there and would love to return but I need to pay the mortgage next month

There were 6 of us. Two of us had the fresh catch of the day...fresh haddock. Absolutely delicious. Not overcooked or over dressed. One had the scallops which she thought were superb. (She shared 2 with my husband and he agreed.) Two of the guys had short ribs and declared them also very good. Our friends who live in Avalon part-time hadn't been there in several years but they were glad to find that it was still great. Our waiter told us about the history of various decorations in the eating area.

Although the food may be a little on the pricey side its a BYO. We'd just as soon bring what we want to drink...in this case 2 whites and 2 reds not knowing what we'd order for 6 of us...and put the money into the food.

Great atmosphere and staff. The food was fantastic, although small portions and expensive. We had short ribs and Swordfish entrees. The lack of a bar was a disappointment, but the BYOB of wine was superb and the service was exceptional.

In a town that does not specialize in top food, The Diving Horse stands out as one of a kind. From the service to the decor to the seasonally fresh menu, everything was great. They have an extremely limited children's menu - one item - which simply indicates that perhaps you want to leave the kids behind and have a wonderful adult night out.
There is a liquor store directly across the street in case you forget to bring your own wine and if you want something stronger (tequila, vodka) you'll have to beg for forgiveness because that is no longer permitted in Avalon.
