“A very nice place if you need to be in Salinas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2010

Let me preface this review by saying that I can't imagine why anyone would want to stay in Salinas. Its claim to fame is presumably the beach, but the beaches further north are far superior (albeit places to stay perhaps inferior). If you want a beautiful beach, go to Olon. That being said, we had to stay in Salinas for a night because we had a late night event to attend and didn't want to have to drive far in the dark. We also wanted some comfort. The reviews of the Barcelo were uninspiring and, judging by the one very ordinary lunch we had there, it was not worth staying at. We had met the owner of Playa Canela in her shop before her hotel opened. She is an interior designer who travels the world in search of handicrafts which she sells in her store. The objects in the store were in the best of taste, so we decided to give her B&B a try. We were not disappointed. The place is right on the shore in what appears to be a residential area still being developed. The road is still unpaved and quite bumpy (presumably this will eventually change). As such, the place is really in the middle of nowhere and becomes a destination in itself. There is no beach, but there is a beautiful swimming pool laid out in a garden setting. The view of the ocean is lovely. There are only six rooms. Ours was tastefully decorated, comfortable and air conditioned. The bathroom was modern and had all expected amenities. Breakfast was served outside and consisted of fresh fruit, eggs cooked to order, rolls, jam, coffee - all very nice. Service was a bit "off," but they had clearly warned us in advance when we made our reservation that they would be setting up for a wedding that day and that things might be a bit hectic. The owner herself attended to our needs and she is a helpful and friendly woman eager to share her knowledge about Ecuador in general. I imagine that our stay would have been more relaxed if we hadn't stumbled into the impending wedding and I look forward to a calmer stay some time soon. A few caveats: there is nothing to do nearby and having your own car is thus highly recommended. The hotel is probably not suitable for small children. Be prepared to hit the hay early; they lock up early and we had to call from outside to ask someone to let us in around midnight. There was also a very talkative parrot who woke us up early with his endless chatter (perhaps he was upset by the wedding preparations). Be aware that they do not have a restaurant and you are on your own for lunch and dinner, although I suspect that they might be willing to cook something up if you asked in advance. Finally, the place is expensive for the area. They charge prices that one would expect to pay in a city or more touristed area in Ecuador. Playa Canela is certainly not a bargain, but it does offer a nice comfortable place to spend a day or two in Salinas.....if one must.
