Stayed at many of the Hotels in Suzhou for business in the past years and found this Marriott to be above average (better than Crown Plaza).

Clean rooms, good service, nice pool and gym, nice furniture.

Location since all around this place are apartments.

The location is the only issue since you can not walk into shops and need to take a cab.

Suzhou is the third stop in our second China vacation, and our family stayed 3 nights at the new Suzhou Marriott. This is an unbelievably gorgeous, new downtown hotel with amazing interior design and first class service.

Lobby and Check-in
Everything about this hotel is superb. The lobby and main floor restaurants are beautifully designed with lovely woods, marble, tile and glass. It is a pleasure to sit in the restaurants and enjoy the view. There is a lovely garden attached to the back of the hotel and tables for sitting outside and enjoying the relaxing landscaping.

Check-in was quick and easy. It was a nice touch that they took our photo because they keep a record of Marriott platinum guests. Both the front desk manager (Eric) and the general manager (Jerry Miao) spent a lot of time talking with us in the executive lounge on the 48th floor, and answered our many questions about Suzhou. Both had spent many years in the US and were totally fluent in English.

Both of our king rooms were on the 43rd floor with views of the city and the neighboring canal. The décor is quite modern with a lovely huge floral pattern in the dark reddish orange carpet. The light wood walls and lighting are outstanding. The desk and counter area are large enough to store the items needed to use your laptop, charge your camera and get a drink from the fridge without moving from your chair. The 85USD weekend rate per room is an incredible value for a facility this luxurious.

The huge bath is first class with Toto fixtures that are amazingly beautiful and work as well as the ones we have at home. There is a gorgeous freestanding tub that we wish we could take home. The glass shower has a large window for lighting and nice ledge for seating. The one-handed shower, bath and sink controls are easy to use and work well as do all Toto fixtures.

The marble floors and glass tile walls are luscious choices in the bath, which has two frosted glass doors to the bedroom for a very open look. Our only complaint about the hotel is so minor that he hate to even mention it; the frosted glass allows light into the bedroom when the bath light is on. This is a beautiful design feature, so it is not a serious problem in our view.

The closet safe is the largest we have seen in a hotel room and easily stores all of ones valuables including a 15-inch laptop. All hotels should have in-room safes this large and designed with the top opening because it is easy to lift the top and place jewelry, cameras, chargers, phones, wallets and everything else inside. There are plenty of built-in storage areas and a nice dresser with four drawers for your belongings. A bedside suit stand is perfect for hanging clothes you need quickly instead of throwing them on the chair.

There is a modern chaise lounge with small table next to the 8 foot wide window that provides a separate seating area and a bit of space for a change of view. The four lamps and plenty of overhead lighting provide more than adequate light, which is important to us as we age.

Everything in this hotel sparkles because it was designed well and is cleaned every day. We could not find any dust anywhere. The maid wiped down the walls and dusted everything while we watched in awe. We have never seen this in the US, so it was a real treat!

The restaurants
We ate breakfast downstairs in the huge Asian Bistro, which resembles a giant food court offering just about everything you can imagine at numerous manned stations. The omelets we ordered were perfectly cooked. The Western breakfast selection was incredible with too many outstanding pastries, French toast, waffles, bacon, juice, fruits, and more than you can eat. You may need a nap after such a large breakfast, but you surely won’t need lunch. There is a huge choice of Asian dishes as well.

We did not get to try the Italian restaurant and the inviting bar and sitting areas on the main floor. If you are staying here for a week or so, these areas are nice places to spend time without feeling boxed in, especially during bad weather.

The executive lounge
Located on the 48th floor with a nice view of downtown, we enjoyed light dinners that mixed Western and Asian foods. The small servings resembled tapas and gave us a chance to try many dishes. The fresh fruits and desserts were outstanding. Free wine, beer and a wide selection of drinks including Pellegrino are a nice touch. The hours are 7AM to midnight, so this is another huge area where one can relax and read, watch TV or chat with fellow travelers. Angelina was quite helpful in the lounge. Breakfast is served in the Asian Bistro downstairs instead of the lounge, and we loved the large selection of breakfast dishes provided downstairs.

Gym and pool:
Both are located on the 3rd floor and are perfect for working out. There is a wide selection of machines in the gym, and it was not busy during our visit. The indoor pool is huge and great for laps or just lounging in a chaise on the roomy deck overlooking the garden at the rear of the hotel. So many indoor hotel pools are placed in such small rooms that they are claustrophobic; this pool and deck area are quite open and well lit. The only thing missing was the spa, which is not open yet.

The concierge desk
We received an enormous amount of assistance from the At Your Service folks near the front desk. David made calls for us and printed the Shanghai airport bus schedule for our return trip. He also marked a Chinese map with all of the attractions we wanted to visit and wrote them on the hotel’s card for our taxi drivers. This was a major help as none of the taxi drivers spoke English.

We were amazed that the service was so much better at this Marriott than that at the JW in Shanghai where we could not get the concierge to help us mail a letter, reserve a train seat, or give us directions in Chinese to our next hotel, the Marriott in Suzhou.

What to do in Suzhou:
This city is the garden capital of the world; you can easily overdose every day on the lovely views even if you stay for a week. The Garden of the Nets, I.M. Pei’s Suzhou Museum, the North Temple Pagoda and the Confucius Temple were our favorites.

Getting around in Suzhou:
If you don’t speak Chinese, remember to get a card and map from the hotel marking your destinations in Chinese for the cab drivers, most of whom will not know where the Marriott is because it is new. It is the largest building in town at the moment and across the street from the municipal offices. We found it by sight as our cabbie from the train station was not familiar with it.

There are inexpensive, hourly trains from Shanghai to Suzhou, and the quality of these trains is excellent. Beware that the trains do sell out, especially on weekends. My husband and I managed to find the last two seats out of Shanghai on Friday, and ended up on sleeper beds (10US each) in 10 cars apart. It was a fun experience after we finally made the long march to our seats. Our children ended up taking a taxi (60.USD one way) after they finished their Shanghai agenda because all of the trains were sold out.

We have stayed in over 100 different Marriott properties all over the world, and this is one of the top 5 in our opinion. The amazing interior design throughout and exceptional service are first class. We hope that there will be more Marriotts using this design, but it is probably too expensive to build a hotel like this outside of China.

I spent few days in Marriott Suzhou and I really had a nice experience
Suzhou is a secondary city but this hotel is really better that other in the major city!
The room was nice and comfortable, also very clean!
The food in the buffet was just amazing, really a lot of different kinds of food! All from Asia.
The service was just good and I needed to ask for a soda for few times; but the chefs, one Indian and the another Italian, were really kinds and they brought me the food that I ask them to cook for me to my table!
The room rate and the buffet price was really convenient.
When I will back to Suzhou China, this is really the hotel were I will go back again.
