We stayed at the Haibeiwan Hotel (Shell Bay Resort is the English name) for a long weekend, and had an overall positive experience. The hotel consists of a large main building and several small, villa-like buildings in which the superior rooms are located. Our superior room had two twin beds, a balcony overlooking the private beach, and a spacious bathroom.
The staff at the front desk spoke no English, but guided us to our room. Entering the room, we encountered a musty smell, and all drawers, cabinets, and windows were open; it appeared that the room had not been used for a while (to judge from the number of people in the hotel, May is off-season). The bathroom furnishings were rather new, and all standard amenities were there (including the ubiquitous condom display). The furniture in the room looked quite used; the carpet was in quite poor condition. Air condition worked well, as did the wired internet. Cleanliness was not up to standards, but bearable.
Our first night, Friday, was quiet; on Saturday, there was a wedding on the rooftop of one of the villas and a karaoke party on the beach, so it was noisy until around 11pm. The Mahjong-playing Chinese in the room next to ours calmed down after a friendly reminder.
The "Western" restaurant that we tried had good seafood, but only on the Chinese menu. There is no seafood on the English menu, only "Western" food.More
