Owner description: Phare, The Cambodian Circus "Amazing vibe & energy, transforming the lives of Cambodian youth" Experience Siem Reap's most unique, authentic top rated (TripAdvisor & Lonely Planet) evening entertainment. More than just a circus, Phare, the Cambodian Circus performers use theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent. Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales. Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

Truly amazing! You must go see these guys when visiting Siem Reap. This was a superb performance by talented young artists. The show is story telling using drama, music, & acrobatics. It is high energy and fast paced. Held in an intimate setting that lets the audience feel the energy first hand. We also saw an earlier show that left many with a tear in their eye, such was the power of the message delivered by the performers.

Dear rudyc900,

Thanks for sharing your experience of Phare, The Cambodian Circus. We're delighted to hear you enjoyed the show.

It's great that you were there early and caught the production Global Arts Corps did with Phare artists to help them process and express their feelings about what their parents and grandparents went through during the war. The outdoor performance you caught was a free event we did for the local community. The production is called "See You Yesterday". They performed in a refugee camp in Rwanda and they hope to take it on the road to other countries soon. More information is available on the Internet about the Global Arts Corps and "See You Yesterday".

Thank you again for the feedback. I'll be sure to share your kind words with the performers.

Sincerely,

Craig Dodge

Although this is billed as a circus and likened to Cirque de Soleil, it is just more lime an acrobatic story telling. The you Pete are so talented. They really should be professionals. They have real audience awareness. Something not to be missed.

Dear Kkkaaabbb,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Phare, The Cambodian Circus.

It's humbling and an honor when guests compare Phare to world-class performance organizations, but just to be clear, we certainly don't bill ourselves in this way. Phare is certainly not a stereotypical, conventional circus either, but rather unique Cambodian story telling using drama, dance, live music and circus arts. Phare artists tell authentic Cambodian stories from recent history, folklore and modern society from their own perspectives and personal experiences.

You raise a great point about how well the artists connect with and engage the audience. It's their unique, authentic character and personality. It makes the experience so much more than just watching a show. They are indeed professional, having graduated from Phare Ponleu Selpak non-profit school and now have fulfilling, rewarding careers in performing arts.

Thank you again for the feedback. We hope readers will follow your advice and not miss the experience.

Sincerely,

Craig Dodge

Ok so if you’ve seen Cirque du Soleil you are in for a disappointment. Also it’s unbelievably hot in there.
That said everything else about this is so charming. It is a school for underserved Cambodians. For them to learn a skill and perform - and they do. With high energy and humour and that makes it so unique. So, adjust expectations and enjoy - an hour well spent..

This one hour program was lots of fun. The acting and story is a bit slow at first but be patient. The acrobatics and stunts at the end are amazing. It really is mind blowing these folks training in this heat to preform these stunts with no safety equipment. My kids were thoroughly engaged.

I felt good about supporting this event and really enjoyed the acrobatics at the end. Unfortunately I did not like the theatre piece. It was very hot during the show, so be sure to get one of their fans to use which I did not see when walking in.

Dear GourmetHiker,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Phare, The Cambodian Circus. You provide 2 very good tips for future guests.

Indeed, Phare is not a conventional circus with random acrobatics or clowning, but original, unique Cambodian story telling. Phare artists use drama, dance, live music and circus arts to tell tales from recent Cambodian history, folklore or modern society.

It is also good to be prepared for warm temperatures. Cambodia is a tropical climate and the traditional big top gets warm despite air-conditioning, evaporative coolers and fans. Guests are encouraged to wear suitable clothing for warm weather, make use of the hand-held fans provided at the big top entrance, and grab a cool water from Phare Cafe to take inside.

Thank you again for the feedback. It's very helpful for us to assure excellent guest experiences.

Best Regards,

Craig Dodge
