Not so much a concert - a very moving evening in which Dr Richner, who has devoted his life to Cambodia, explains the development and work of the hospitals he has established in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. The accompanying film is excellent - it even features a clip of him working in Phnom Penh just before the takeover by the Khmer Rouge in 1975. The Pol Pot years have left Cambodia with an appalling legacy of child mortality so, although the evening was nominally free, we did give a substantial donation - it is the very least one can do.

A nice way to spend Sat evening in Siem Reap - Mostly an introduction to the five hospitals for children in Cambodia that have been buily largely through the effort of one man - who also is a very good cellist. There is a lot of information about the hospitals and his criticism of organizations like WHO who feel there is no hope for countries locked in poverty. Ditto to the warning about it being very cool thanks to aggressive air conditioning.

We stayed at River Village Manor (see separate review) and they suggested we might like to attend this event on the Saturday night at the local Children's Hospital. Our Tuk Tuk driver took us there and we were ushered into a state of the art full theatre well filled with visitors - about 400 others that night. The esteemed doctor took the stage and "entertained" us for 1.5 hours. This included him playing his Cello, talking and showing a great film.
It certainly opened our eyes on health services in Cambodia. With us both coming from large hospital management backgrounds we understood the issues. (I won't make any comment here).
At the end we were asked to either give blood or (if we were too old or unwell) give money.
Travelling on a budget we choose to give blood. A couple days later we ventured in (with our trusty Tuk Tuk driver) to give blood. It is a modern sterile blood collecting set up - maybe not up to Australian city standards as far as decor goes but certainly no hassles with cleanliness.
Importantly we asked out Tuk tuk driver to join us which he did with much angst. If you choose to give blood take your driver with you. They need blood products desperately and locals are the best source. He was very proud to wear his free T Shirt to show he had done something for his own kids who regularly use this health service.

Following the recommendations on TripAdvisor for this activity was one of the best things we did during our 4-day stay in Cambodia in late March. You'll not only enjoy Dr Richner's cello playing but come away much better informed about the health and poverty of the country and some of the reasons for it, all in the space of around an hour. Take cash to donate to his projects - you'll want to. Dr Richner is truly an inspiration. One tip: take a jumper, the air con is fierce!

This one hour free concert of passionate cello solos and equally passionate details of the Kantha Botha Foundation will inspire and humble you. Dr Beat Richter a swiss doctor, has dedicated his life to establishing 4 childrens hospitals in Cambodia. This man is a modern day saint !
