The owner speaks French and is very helpful and nice. The guest house is very well located between the Morning Market and the Mekong.
The only drawback is the quite noisy environment with barking dogs and morning market rumors.

We stayed at the Lao Lu Lodge twice on our trip through Laos - the first time rather by accident, the second time, because we liked it so much.

Lao Lu Lodge is located in a colonial style complex with light rooms, comfortable beds, pretty bathrooms with hot water. The river boats up and down the Mekong leave pretty much just down the street.

The staff was very friendly and helpful.

There was only one small shortcoming: The people in the neighbouring house and especially their animals (dog and chickens) woke us up every morning around 5 o'clock.

As I am writing this I have extended my stay at the Lao Lu four times. I came across the place from a review and found it by walking around asking people where it was. It is tucked in between the Mekong and the morning market and not touristy at all - and it doesn't have a website. The rooms are clean and beautifully decorated and the bathrooms are pristine with decorated ceramic sinks.
What is amazing about this place is the family feeling you encounter when walking in. You really feel right at home. I have never in my years of travel come across such a considerate warm couple as the owners of this place as well as the people working here and that transcends to the guesthouse. The French colonial style and the halls upstairs and downstairs plus the area in front of the reception makes it a perfect palace to hang out. Wi-Fi works well and if you need info on Laos or what to do and see the owners are happy to help. I will definitely come back and after a couple of weeks here I will be moved when it is time to say goodbye. Wish I could extend my stay once more...;-)

Lao Lu Lodge is a little known place as it does not have a website, and reviews about it are few. We came across it while meandering around and it was a real find. It was cheaper than our previous accommodation, Thatsaphone GH, and offered better value. The location may be a little way off the main street compared to Thatsaphone, but it's very quiet, and is a few minutes' walk from the Mekong on one side, and about 10 minutes' walk to the main street on the other side. There's a local morning market nearby, and its' not touristy at all. We particularly loved our room, which was spacious, clean, and charming with its wooden furniture and white linens. The equally spacious and clean bathroom (equipped with a lovely blue and white porcelain wash bowl) was a delight to use after our previous experience. And yes, the hot water worked well and the pressure was good. There's also a nice space at the reception where you can enjoy complimentary tea and coffee the whole day, and in the mornings, bananas as well. It doesn't offer breakfast, but you can always ask the lodge to make the necessary arrangements if you want to have dinner here.
