I stayed here for one night. Very different to more corporate hotels - had a real sense of old grandeur - perhaps a bit tired around the edges but it was still very memorable. When I stayed the demonstrations were camped directly outside the hotel - but I had no problems and if nothing else proved the hotel is 'central'...

Paying USD 100 a night to stay in a dark room with no view, in a cheap city is normally unjustified. The Metropole has, however, a certain charm that might mitigate that rip-off feeling of having booked at last minute, especially if one stays for a short period of time and then searches for more reasonable alternatives.

The hotel is perfectly located. Definitely much better than the four seasons or the san giovanni, and equally well as the sofitel or the much cheaper new capry. The Metropole is a very old and traditional hotel which and one of its most distinctive features is an amazingly beautiful wooden elevator in the middle of the lobby -its really unique in its kind. This elevator probably would get a license to work as such only in Alexandria. Other places would be happier to have it in a museum.

The long red-rugged stairs also cause a strong impression on visitors, and everywhere in the hotel you have a feeling of grand space -rooms are quite large, and the hallways significantly wide.

Going to the "checklist" of the hotel-important things:

1) In spite of its great location, the hotel is not noisy. Double glass windows work well.
2) Bed is quite comfortable.
3) Hotel looks generally clean.
4) Breakfast is decent, although coffee is tough to drink.
5) Service is OK. Not great for sure, but not terrible. Don't even think of asking for a map of the city... no available!
6) Price is too high for the value.
7) Decent restaurants surrounding the hotel.

Overall, I would stay again at the hotel for half what I paid. If you travel on business, you might want to try Sofitel, that looks nicer and it's also a traditional building.

Room Tip: i think some have a sea view. go for those!

Hotel is hard to find, and locals are not familiar with it. From the train station it is a good walk through a lot of seedy streets. The hotel itself is on a main business street and in a very noisy traffic area. But this is Egypt, where drivers are required to honk horns constantly without any need or motivation.
The spacious rooms are in Neo-classical style with high ceilings, and the entire hotel is of a high quality standard.
The breaksfast is average, buffet style, with a good selection. For the price, it is a bargain.
The staff does not seem to be well trained in customer relations, and when I had forgotten my passport at a previous hotel, they gave up after telling me the phone number of the hotel was wrong. I had to do my own calling to arrange to get my passport back.
They had no bank or facilities for money exchange, and the banks on the street do not open until after 10am.
I would probably stay there again, given that there are not many choices of hotels that are not in the city center for a decient price..

Room Tip: If I knew, I would have gotten it for myself.

Stayed here for 5 nights late Sept/ beginning of Oct - just turned up & paid approx £65 per night for standard room.
Atmospheric, wonderful high ceilings, lots of gold paint, some period furnishings & well maintained. Wiring possiblely a bit dodgy eg our bedside lamp only worked if main lights on! after we reported it this was sorted out by extention cable into socket into another wall, we had to phone in middle if night as unable to open bathroom door due to handle - however niggles aside would definately recommend. Beautiful original lift.
Good buffet choice for breakfast although I did not think coffee quality was particually good, lovely large restaurant with views over the seafront.
You step out of the hotel enterence into the main shopping area - very convenient. Easy walking distance along the corniche to the Bibliotheca (a must).
Use the tram!! it is slow & the stations will not be in English as you go past (they are named in English on the back of the arabic signposts but you cannot see from the tram) but hey its an experience & very cheap. Tip - count the stops as you go past.
Along with the library make the National Museum a must, well displayed objects in a lovely old house, cafe in the back garden.
DO if possible check if attractions are open before you go, as in Cairo we found some places closed eg Royal Jewellery Museum & Mahmoud Said House with no indication of when they will reopen.
At least one visit to Cap d'Or is the evening must. An old fashioned bar with lots of character & also does seafood. Easy walk from Metropole.

Room Tip: Would thouroughly recommend. We had a room overlooking town which was cheaper albeit not an interest...

From the moment we were greeted with a fresh lemon juice to a very quick and adept room adjustment, the staff at this historic property made you feel at home. Nice large rooms with comfortable beds was provided. Breakfast could possibly have used some additions but perhaps that is my American tastes.

Room Tip: A view of the Mediterranean would be preferred
