Catacombs bring many images to mind, typical the christians in Rome. These are not like those really.

The catacombs once filled with treasures of the dead now contain only the sarcophaguses, sea water has infiltrated the site in decades past an annualy in winter. The interior was carved out of solid rock, columns, etc., rather than digging a hole and bringing materials to build columns, etc. 30 minutes is enough time and you get to back in time many centuries. Well worth the ticket.

We visited this as a part of the Alexandria day tour with Emo tours. The story behind the discovery of these tombs is very fascinating. On the inside though, it's kind of gloomy and freakish, just to imagine them coming down here to bury/ cremate the dead and actually have lunch besides the tomb. There are some carvings and drawings on the inside which is a good example of Egyptian influence on Greek-Roman lifestyle.
The site itself could do with some basic maintenance, good lighting and placards that give proper explanation (else one is left relying on the guide's version).

The Egyptians were way ahead of their time, but it's eerie that they were so obsessed with death that they lived off it!

very interesting to know how the ancient made this burial chambers..the tunnels, the holes undergrounds, the drainage, the craved.. it feel great to witness this visible evidence where three cultures, three arts and three religions ; Egyptian, Greek and Roman; were superimposed upon Egyptian soil.
