You know from the minute you enter the lobby and see the Adriatic through floor to ceiling wall to wall windows that this place will be special.

All the staff were top notch and respectful. The rooms were excellent with lots of space, large double sink bathrooms and an excellent shower!

The restaurant terrace was a great place to have a cocktail or night cap.

The old town is a simple ten minute walk so you could hardly be more convenient.

We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: ensure you spend the extra money for an ocean view room.

Although Dubrovnik has dozens of luxury hotels, Excelsior was on my list. It had a great view of the City Walls from the sea. It was located at the sea, there is no beach but direct access to the crystal clear sea by ladder, and the hotel has an inside pool. It’s a five minute walk to the Old Town inside City Walls. Very convenient. The hotel is a bit in the pricy side as expected from hotels in Dubrovnik. But if you must make sure you book a sea view room preferably a deluxe. There are two sections of the hotel, Villa Odak (older but renovated building) and the newer building. Both have beautifully decorated rooms. I prefer the newer building, go for a deluxe room with sea view. Rooms are really clean. Bathroom has L’occitane products which I really love.

Make sure you make time for the outside lounge/bar it’s really nice with great views and lovely seating.

If you’re arriving by ferry then make sure you contact hotel ahead for transport, the hotel isn’t close by and not easily accessible, plus you might not get a taxi since most people are planning to get one to their accommodation. The airport is approximately 30 min away by car.

We stayed here for 3 nites and had a fabulous stay. The reception staff were so pleasant and efficient. They upgraded us to the Executive suite which was huge and awesome, with a big double balcony with the best view of the sea.
The b/fast was excellent with big variety of all b/fast items with made to order different style eggs.
I loved the location of this hotel. It was a 7-10 minute walk to the old town and a lovely walk along the sea.
This is one hotel that I will definitely come back to, and highly recommend this one!

Stayed for a week at the Excelsior on a B&B basis in September.

The check in was easy and quick (despite being quite late due to yet another delayed flight with Easyjet), we were the only people at the Reception desk.

We had booked a classic room through Expedia (this was the only option offered at the time of booking) and we got a classic room. Initially we were disappointed because the room was dark with only a small shoulder height window overlooking the road, I felt slightly claustrophobic. I think we were comparing it to our room at the sister hotel (Bellevue) which we stayed at last year. That room was huge with a magnificent view of the bay, we reminded ourselves that during that stay we had been offered a small upgrade on arrival so probably not comparing like with like.

That said the room at Excelsior was exceptionally clean and comfortable. In fact the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.

We had an issue with our walk in shower, it kept flooding the entire bathroom floor every time we used it. One night on our way out we asked at Reception if we could have some extra towels to mop up the water and the lady on Reception was very apologetic and when we got back there was a bottle of wine and two glasses in the room which was totally unexpected and a nice touch. During use the shower did cycle between a bit hot an a bit cold but this is not a complaint just an observation.

The whole hotel is sparkling clean the restaurants and bar areas are modern and welcoming and the staff are so friendly but not in an ‘in your face’ way.

We didn’t eat at the restaurants because we enjoy the old town so much but breakfast was lovely, with plenty of choice and if you sit outside there is a great view.

I used the gym and the fab the indoor pool, very relaxing and quiet (except for one day where three or four school age children were dashing round and jumping in and out unsupervised). I managed several swims there which offset the wonderful ice cream from the old town!

We enjoyed the hotels sun terrace which is directly on the sea, the water was cool and welcoming.

The only issue we had during our stay was on our last day while we were relaxing on the terrace there was a wedding party and the guests were on the balcony above with very loud music. This rather spoiled our last afternoon because we are very much peace and quiet seekers.

I recommend the Excelsior and I would go back.

We stayed here for a week after booking with BA holidays. After researching the types of rooms on the hotel's website and Mr&Mrs Smith, we opted for the entry level 'classic tower room'. This room was being sold for £400 a night when we were there.

Upon checking in, the receptionist did not offer us a warm welcome, was unfriendly and just gave us keys. He hardly spoke...and didn't tell us where the lift was, or offer any help. He did tell us about breakfast though which was something at least!

We arrived to our room and laughed in shock horror at what this 5* property thought was worth £400 a night! The room was tiny, very basic 'travelodge style' furniture/fittings, you had to walk sideways across the bottom of the bed to get round to the other side, not knocking the TV on the wall (which had obviously been done a lot because the TV was on an angle!) We had booked a King room, and the bed had been made into twins. Easy enough to fix, but not good attention to detail per the booking system.

My pillowcase had a hole in it, not something you'd expect to get past a good quality hotel's housekeeping manager. The room was at the back of the hotel, within touching distance of a busy road into Dubrovnik. You could hear people talking as they walked past, and a constant buzz of cars through the night.

The welcome plate of nuts and fruit was a nice touch, although weirdly it wasn't cleared away (we ended up having to leave it outside the room the next day so it would go!). There was also a bottle of wine on the desk but we weren't sure if this was part of the welcome package or not. If it is, you should let the guests know, it might have helped our disappointment at the room.

The bathroom was huge in comparison to the size of the room, however you had to keep the blind fully closed as it was facing said road.

We asked reception straight away if we could move as this room was not per the photographs on their website. The receptionist told me they were fully booked that night but to check in the morning. Surely they should know what availability looked like for the following day, and could have made the change at that time for the following day?

We went to the piano bar terrace for a drink because we had no plans to spend any time in that pokey room. The terrace and bar are lovely, with 'the' view of the old town and perfect for a sundowner. We found the service there hit and miss throughout the week with some staff being very friendly and some very rude, but all staff seemed to have a blind eye if you wanted another round or the bill for example. Not very relaxing having to wave at people or go to the bar yourself and again, not 5* service...

Breakfast was like being on a package holiday. The dining room was vast with a DIY buffet with a wide selection, and an omelette station. The omelette chefs were totally charming and very polite. The waiting staff were quite slow and again had a tendency to not see tables trying to get their attention.

After breakfast we went to speak to reception about moving our room and were told that once again they were fully booked but we might be able to move tomorrow. It seems that most people only spend one or two nights here, lots of coach parties/cruisers so we were unusual to be staying there for a whole week I think.

The following day, we went to reception and were told that they couldn't do anything but to check with the manager who would be in later today. Behind the desk they had rows and rows of keys for check in today, and when I asked if we could switch rooms with one of the arrivals it was a flat no. Later that day, we went back to reception where the team were really empathetic to our room situation and kindly offered to move us to a different room. (THANK YOU - you made us very happy!)

The new room was the next level up, but was the room that was photographed advertising the classic rooms. The new room was larger, still very basic but a lot more comfortable for two people and no risk of crashing into the bed or TV in the middle of the night! The bathroom was small, but had everything we needed. The windows were not soundproof so you could still hear traffic and an annoying manhole cover, but it wasn't as loud as being right outside like the previous room.

We had two days where we were left without towels which was frustrating, and one day where instead of bath towels, they left hand towels! Again, 5* service this is not...We found turndown a bit weird. There wasn't a turn down so to speak where the curtains were drawn, lamps switched on, maybe music on the tv and the duvet turned down. Nope, two chocolates were left on a bedside table. Thanks, but not really turndown is it?

We spent a few hours one afternoon at the beach. There is no visible service/pool staff there which they are missing out on. If there were menus and staff circulating they would make a fortune on F&B. We did manage to track a menu down from a table at the door going out. There were however no staff in sight anywhere so my husband wandered down the beach area and ended up in the kitchen to give an order of two drinks and a calamari to someone in shorts and hotel polo shirt/cap. Presumably this was one of the poolside staff but who knows?! The waitress brought it over and practically flung it down in front of us! The calamari was so overcooked it was crunchy like pork crackling, but the chips it came with were delicious. Such a shame. That was the first and last time we spent any time on the beach/pool area.

Overall the hotel is ok, it certainly didn't add anything to our holiday other than somewhere to sleep and eat breakfast. I know Dubrovnik is notoriously expensive and I don't mind that but in my option it is too expensive for what it is. However, the location is fabulous and if you pay for a sea view room I'm sure it would be wonderful.

Room Tip: Do not book a classic tower room - sea view is the only way to get away from the noise and a larger space!
