My wife and I decided to spend our honeymoon in Panama City, and after visiting the Canal, touring Casco Viejo and spending a weekend at Bocas del Toro, we felt like seeing some of the local art.

After a short search, we found out that the only museum of art in Panama is MAC (The Museum of Contemporary Art). Upon our arrival we were greeted by an extremely helpful staff member who gave us our own private tour of the exhibition that was currently showing. Her explanations were thorough and she was very agreeable and open to our questions. It´s a relatively small museum, but the currently showing exhibition, which constantly changes, gave us a good overview of what is done locally.

My wife and I spent a lovely evening; additionally, entry is completely free! (A 5$ donation is suggested at the entrance, but it is optional.) Wifi is free, coffee complementary and they offer local Panamanian snacks in their rest area.

We just came back to Minnesota, and we can both agree that our honeymoon would have felt incomplete without that stop. Keep it up MAC!

The museum is in an obscure part of Panama City but once you get there, it was an interesting collection. There are different shows at different dates throughout the year, featuring one artist or another--I think all Latin American and of good quality. The permanent collection is varied with different media--oil, photography, lithograph, line drawings. A contemporary art aficionado would be well pleased with this museum--which can only grow larger as time goes on.

Not worth a taxi ride. 2 rooms with 2 different photo exhibitions, very poor and not interesting. At least they do not charge entrance fee, would have felt more like a robbery.

I had to show the taxi driver a map with the museum marked on it. This is a small, privately-funded non-profit exhibit space -- not a museum. No permanent collection on display, although the website indicates a permanent collection. On our visit, a two-room display of historic photographs of the Panamanian Red Cross. As the only art "museum" in Panama City, this was a real let-down. No art museum in a city this size???

The museum is interesting, and its $5 entrance fee makes it better value-for-money than the other attractions (i.e., the Panama Canal visitor center is $15). The collection is small compared to similar museums in other countries, but was well worth the trip.
